BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - The night cap on Sunday evening between UIndy baseball and Kentucky Wesleyan proved to be just as the first two games of the series. The Greyhounds, now 2-1 to begin the 2018 campaign, used a late-inning score to defeat the Panthers at Western Kentucky University, 4-3.
Michael Schalasky pitched a tough 3.2 innings to earn the win, allowing just two baserunners. The sophomore struck out three batters, redeeming himself after taking the loss on Friday night.Â
Kyle Orloff found the left-center field gap in the top of the ninth to chase home
Macy Holdsworth, giving the Greyhounds the 4-3 win.
UIndy rode its momentum into a first-inning score on Sunday night, as Holdsworth scored the first of his second straight three-run game on the offensive end.Â
Blake Richardson drove in his first of the season with the single.
Reid Werner was chased from the game for the Hounds after allowing three runs in three innings of work, but Holdsworth knotted the game at three apiece with his second homer of the season in the fourth.Â
Scoring went stagnant for the teams, with Schalasky taming the Panthers' bats after coming into the game with two outs in the sixth inning. Holdsworth reached base for the third time of the game with a walk in the top of the ninth, before Orloff slapped a run-scoring double. Schalasky issued a free pass with two outs in the KWC side of the ninth, but forced a weak fly ball to Orloff himself in left field.Â
Holdsworth went two for four with a dinger, including a walk. His three runs increases his season total to seven and has now hit two home runs to begin the season. Orloff's ninth-inning two-base knock was his first extra-base hit of the season after recording 14 at-bats.Â
The Greyhounds' bullpen was lights out in the season-opening series, allowing just one earned run in 11.2 innings against the Panthers. The relievers combined for 10 strikeouts and three walks.Â
UIndy begins the home portion of its schedule next weekend, hosting Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday, before finishing the weekend with a two-game set vs. Quincy. The two against the Hawks will not count toward the GLVC standings.
