WESTFIELD, Ind. - The UIndy baseball team dropped to 2-2 on Friday afternoon, succumbing to a run in the 11th inning by Notre Dame to lose, 4-3. It marks the second extra-inning game already this season, and also the second time the Hounds have suffered a defeat.Â
Jake Sprinkle took the ball for the Greyhounds, scattering six hits and issuing one walk in four innings of work. The junior surrendered a two-run homer to sneak over the fence in the second inning before another Falcon run crossed the plate in the third. The righty allowed three runs to score, all earned.Â
Before Notre Dame got on the scoreboard,
Nick Miller tripled and scored on a
Hunter Waning groundout in the bottom of the second to give UIndy the initial lead. Another groundout in the third tied the game at two apiece, this time off the bat of
Storm Joop, who scored
Blake Richardson.Â
Joop drove in another tying run in the fourth inning, flying out deep to center to allow
Trey Smith to score. There would not be another run until the 11th inning.
Michael Schalasky pitched five innings of the bullpen for the Greyhounds, punching out five Falcons over the course of the 58-pitch performance. After allowing a lead-off single to begin the 10th frame, senior
Dylan Stutsman immediately closed the door on the Falcons' push by striking out a pair, while
Adam Vasil caught the NDC runner stealing.Â
After leaving two runners on the base paths in their half of the 10th, the Stutsman and the Hounds allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate in the 11th after the Falcons recorded two hits and forced a walk all with two outs.
Blake Richardson was hit by a pitch with one gone in the bottom of the inning, but UIndy failed to even the game and fell, 4-3.Â
Kyle Orloff had four knocks on the day, while the freshman Smith reached base three times and stole a base.Â
UIndy and 13th-ranked Quincy are scheduled to play tomorrow afternoon around 3 p.m. from Grand Park in Westfield.
