WESTFIELD, Ind. - The UIndy baseball team (3-2) faced its first test against a ranked opponent on Sunday afternoon at Grand Park, and it passed with flying colors. Despite the deceiving stat line, sophomore
Tyler Hosto missed a lot of bats facing the 13th-ranked Quincy Hawks (1-3) on his way to racking up eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. The Greyhound bullpen was phenomenal once again, not allowing hit or run the final 3.1 frames.Â
Dylan Stutsman closed out his 27th career save against the Hawks, becoming the all-time leader in the category in program history.Â
The Greyhounds attacked early, snagging a run off Hawks' ace Riley Martin after three straight singles by
Storm Joop,
Macy Holdsworth, and
Kyle Orloff to begin the bottom of the first. After Quincy tied it in the third inning,
Nick Miller gave UIndy back the lead with a single that scored
Dylan Jones.Â
The Hawks responded again in the fourth, but Orloff and Miller each drove in their second run of the day in the Hounds' half to lead 4-2. St. Joseph's transfer Jeff Hightower roped out of left field oin the sixth for Quincy to inch the visitors with a run, but old teammate of Hightower,
Joe Kenney, launched one of his own, his first in the Crimson and Grey, to give the Hounds the 5-3 advantage.Â
Jon Crawford came in relief to throw 2.1 innings of work, issuing just two free passes before Stutsman came in the ninth to close out the victory. The senior closer passed former Hound Pat McDonald, who earned 26 saves over the course of the 1996 and 1997 seasons.Â
Orloff is now on a modest four-game hitting streak after being held 0-for in the season opener against Kentucky Wesleyan. The UIndy bullpen has allowed just two runs in the team's five games so far, both coming in extra innings.Â
UIndy wraps up its two-game set with No. 13 Quincy tomorrow afternoon at Grand Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
