Softball earns two wins at Grand Park tripleheader

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy softball team improved its record to 6-2 by winning two of three contests at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., Sunday. The Greyhounds sandwiched a 6-5 extra-inning loss to Ohio Dominican with two victories against in-region Urbana.

GAME 1: UIndy 6, Urbana 0
Continuing a weather-halted game that started yesterday, the Hounds shut out the Blue Knights, 6-0. Freshman Haylie Foster spun four scoreless innings while striking out five to move to 2-0 on the young season. Fellow-freshman Halie Waters finished to game with three no-hit frames to earn her first collegiate save.

Redshirt-junior Brooke Riess and freshman Hanna Burris each had a two-RBI single to fuel the Hounds offensively.

GAME 2: Ohio Dominican 6, UIndy 5 (9 inn.)
UIndy jumped out to 5-0 lead only to see the Panthers tie it with a five spot in the top of the sixth. Sophomore starter Lauren Honkomp held ODU scoreless through five, but the Panthers chased her from the game by batting around in the sixth and scoring five big runs – four of which were unearned.

Waters (1-1) came on to get the final out of the sixth and retired the Panthers in order in the seventh and eighth innings until a leadoff walk in the top of the ninth eventually came around for the game-winning run.

Freshman Gianni Iannantone went 3 for 3 with a walk and two runs scored, while senior Julia Liceaga had two singles and a pair of ribbies.

GAME 3: UIndy 9, Urbana 1 (5 inn.)
The Greyhounds took their frustrations out on the Blue Knights, asserting themselves with five runs in the first and two more in the second. Junior Taylor Podschweit had a triple, a single, two RBIs and a steal in the first two innings alone.

Sophomore Ariana Liceaga (double) and freshman Kamrie Foster (single) each notched a pinch hit in the fifth.

Haylie Foster picked up her second pitching win of the day, allowing one run in three innings pitched. Junior Katelyn Fisher followed with two scoreless innings to finish off the win.

The Greyhounds are scheduled to play four games at the Midwest Region Crossover next weekend, starting with a match-up versus Cedarville Saturday, Feb. 23.
