Hounds stage comeback to earn first victory over ranked opponent

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy women's lacrosse team (2-1) staged multiple comebacks on Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium, eventually overcoming the ninth-ranked Regis Rangers, 12-11. The Greyhounds came back from five goals in the first half before sinking into a four-goal deficit in the second frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds spotted the Rangers five early goals, forcing a UIndy goalie change after 12 minutes of game action. The 24th-ranked Hounds responded, however, controlling the flow of the game thereafter. Delaney Davidson added a tally to the scoreboard for the Hounds less than a minute after the Rangers' fifth goal, before Peyton Romig and Cara Brown answered within 10 seconds of each other five minutes later to get within a pair.

Lauryn Hardoy made it 5-4 with 10 minutes remaining in the half after Davidson used a spin-move pass to get by a defender. The freshman then evened the game with under three minutes left charging down the field on a successful clear attempt.

Regis only took 90 seconds to open the scoring in the second half, but Davidson scored twice within 31 seconds to give the Greyhounds their first lead of the day at 7-6. Regis rallied with five straight goals again, sneaking them past Irene Carlquist in net.

Just like the first half, UIndy scored five unanswered goals, including two from Davidson and a pair from Hannah Burczyk. Burczyk's latter tally giving the Greyhounds a 12-11 advantage with eight minutes remaining. The Rangers earned opportunities down the stretch, but Carlquist stood tall in goal, making three saves in the final seven minutes.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Irene Carlquist allowed just six goals in 48 minutes of action, making nine saves. It is the sophomore's first win of the season, and first since the GLIAC quarterfinal last year against Findlay.

Delaney Davidson rattled off five goals for the Greyhounds, the most for a UIndy player since April 30, 2017. The Iona transfer now has eight goals in three games this season.

Peyton Romig tied the UIndy record with 11 draw controls in the win, while adding four ground balls. Abigail Lagos, who scored twice on the afternoon, also scooped up for ground balls. Lauryn Hardoy's two goals and three assists increases her season total to six and five, respectively.

Riley McClure and Kelly Pinkerton stood out on defense against the Rangers, each causing four turnovers. While McClure earned two draw control wins, Pinkerton picked up a pair of ground balls.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds travel to Charleston, W. Va. next Saturday, February 24, for a battle with the Charleston Golden Eagles. Charleston is 1-0 this season.
