ON TAP
The UIndy men's basketball completes its regular season this weekend, looking to sweep nationally-ranked Bellarmine on Thursday before hosting senior day on Saturday against Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Greyhounds topped the Knights back on January 25 in Nicoson Hall by the score of 76-68. To start the conference campaign, UIndy went into Parkside and defeated the Rangers, 62-52.Â
ABOUT BELLARMINE
The Knights have been one of the best teams in the country, accumulating 24 wins in 26 games this season. The only losses have come at the hands of Wisconsin-Parkside and the Greyhounds, both on the road. Bellarmine has outscored its opponents by an average of 18.1 points per game this season.Â
Brent Bach has been a force for the Knights, averaging 15.4 ppg on 57.7 percent shooting this season. The senior was named GLVC Player of the Week on January 8 after averaging 20.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, and 1.5 apg in wins over Maryville and William Jewell. Chivarsky Corbett joined Bach in the conference ranks a month later after having a monstrous pair of games vs. McKendree and Southern Indiana. The Tampa native 8.3 ppg and 4.0 rpg this season. Adam Eberhard (14.3) Alex Cook (10.5) are also in double figures, while Eberhard also leads in rebounding (6.3).
ABOUT WISCONSIN-PARKSIDE
It has been an up-and-down season for the Rangers, who lost their first six games after succumbing to the Greyhounds in the conference opener. Since then, Parkside has gone 9-11, including a 7-8 mark in GLVC play. In January, the Rangers defeated top-ranked Bellarmine before defeating No. 25 William Jewell just two games later. The team has lost each of its last three games.
Jameel Moore paces the Rangers in scoring with 14.7 per game, while also dishing out a team-best 3.8 assists. Goran Zagorac is pulling down 7.3 rebounds per game and has blocked a total of 23 shots in just 16 games. Leading defender Adam Bonk has recorded 31 steals this season while averaging 11.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists.Â
LAST TIME OUT (at William Jewell)
Both teams played stellar defense in the first half, as the teams combined to shoot 26 for 67 from the floor. The first five minutes were electric, however, with
Jesse Kempson open the scoring with a three-ball for the Hounds.
CJ Hardaway Jr. scored his first bucket of the day to knot the game at 11 apiece before the under-16 timeout, but that is when the offense would begin to slack and the defense pick up.
Â
The Greyhound attack stalled in the middle of the period, leading the Cardinals to take advantage of the foul calls being called against the visitors. William Jewell stretched its lead to 11 at the 6:15 mark, in large part of going 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. Hall and
Trevor Lakes hit back-to-back triples late in the first half to get the Hounds within seven heading into the break.
Â
The sophomore sensation scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half, fueling the Greyhound comeback. Hall and
Eric Davidson traded three pointers, while Kempson and Hardaway Jr. chipped in in the lane, but it took nearly seven minutes before the visitors evened the game at 52 apiece. A minute and a half later, UIndy would never trail again.
Â
Alex Etherington and Hall combined for 13 straight points leading into the under-four timeout, growing momentum for the visiting Hounds, who held onto a three-point lead. UIndy continued its lock down defense on William Jewell, which held the host Cardinals to 30 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes. The Greyhounds shot just 68 percent from the charity stripe in the second half, but made 11 of their last 12 to seal the 90-79 road win.
The Greyhounds have now out-rebounded their opponents in three straight games, the team's first such streak of the season. UIndy has only snagged more rebounds than its opponents in eight games this season.
Â
The team dished out 14 assists in the win, while only turning the ball over 10 times.
CJ Hardaway Jr. led the team with five dimes, while
Trevor Lakes recorded four for season-best. Lakes' five rebounds is also the freshman's most since he had six on December 14 against Bluefield State.
