Softball starts Spring Break with two Sunday wins

CLERMONT, Fla. – The 20th-ranked UIndy softball team (14-4) opened their six-game Spring Break trip at the PFX Spring Games in Central Florida Sunday with a pair of wins. The Greyhounds took down St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-1, before doubling up Sioux Falls, 8-4.

Freshman starter Halie Waters (4-2) went the distance in the circle, holding the Spartans to a single run in the complete-game win. A solo home run in the fifth proved her only blemish, as she scattered five hits and three walks while fanning five.

The Greyhounds got on the board with an RBI groundout by freshman Taylor Danielson in the second. After starting the third with back-to-back singles from Julia Liceaga and Jessie Noone, UIndy tacked on two more thanks to an Spartan fielding error and a run-scoring single from Taylor Podschweit.

Freshman Gianni Iannantone had two hits, including a sixth-inning double.

The Hounds scored the game's first eight runs before cruising to victory versus the Cougars. A two-run double by Podschweit got things going in the first, while Danielson scored two more with her second homer of the season in the fourth.

Danielson, who added a double and a run scored in the sixth, finished 3 for 3 with two runs, two ribbies and a walk. Fellow-freshman Brooke Montgomery had three singles.

Sophomore Lauren Honkomp (5-2) earned the pitching win. The Richmond, Ind., native started the game with five scoreless frames before giving up a three-run home run in the sixth. Junior Katelyn Fisher came in to get the final four outs, surrendering a single unearned run in the process.

The Greyhounds continue play at the Spring Games with two games on Monday. They'll take on Bridgeport at 2 p.m., followed by a rubber match with Purdue Northwest at 4:30 p.m. Live stats will not be available Monday.
