LAS VEGAS - The No. 11 UIndy men's tennis team flexed its muscles on the first day of spring break, defeating 19th-ranked Hawai'i Pacific by the score of 8-1. The Hounds swept the doubles matches, while also taking five of the six single points. The Sharks claimed the NCAA Division II title in 2016.Â
The Hounds' number-one doubles of
Renato Lima and
Andrea Morlet defeated Hawai'i Pacific's 20th-ranked duo of Maxime Gayte and Benjamin Locciasno, 8-5. While
Nils Hoffacker and
Dario Huber also defeated HPU's number-three tandem by the same score as their number-one counterparts, second doubles proved to be a thriller.
Magnus Mueller and
Christoph Drechsler won the tiebreaker over Juan Erro and Adrian Elduque, defeating the Sharks' number-two pairing, 9-8.Â
Four of the six singles' matches resulted in a Greyhound triumph in quick fashion. No. 5 Hoffacker won 6-2, 7-5 over Gayte, while
Matej Kostadinov also cruised to a victory in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.Â
While Lima fought off Loccisano 6-3, 6-4, HPU earned its lone victory in number-five singles as Erro defeated Drechsler in three sets. Huber outlasted Lyttle, 6-3, 4-6, 12-10, in number-three singles, redeeming Drechsler's earlier loss.Â
Mueller quickly defeated Gerardo Irrarrazabal 6-3, 6-4, as it was the first singles match to finish first.Â
The Greyhounds battle Western New Mexico at 12 ET tomorrow from Darling Tennis Center.
