Homers back Werner in Hounds win at Maryville

ST. LOUIS - The No. 14 UIndy baseball team (11-2) won its fourth straight game over a GLVC member, and ninth in a row overall, on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Maryville (8-10) by the score of 11-2. It is the third time this season the Hounds have scored 10 or more runs.

The Greyhounds smacked three dingers in the win - Dylan Jones, Kyle Orloff, and Tyler Phillips - behind Reid Werner's quality start. The righty sophomore allowed seven hits over 6.2 innings of work, striking out four and surrendering one earned run.

Both teams put multiple tallies on the scoreboard in the first inning. After Orloff followed Macy Holdsworth with a double, Jones drilled a three-run shot to center field to give the Hounds an early 3-0 lead. Maryville got two of those runs back, however, in its half of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch and infield single.

Holdsworth singled again in the fourth, plating Joe Kenney and Hunter Waning, and Phillips tacked on another run in the fifth with a run-scoring knock to extend the visitors' lead to four. The bats went quiet until the eighth inning, when the Greyhounds put up another crooked number, thanks to the long ball. Three hitters after Phillips found the left-center gap for a four-bagger, Orloff went opposite field for a two-run homer as UIndy's lead grew to 9-2.

Phillips matched Jones with a team-best three RBI after a sacrifice fly scored Nick Miller in the ninth, while Storm Joop added his name to column with an infield single to score Kenney.

Werner improved since his last start at Kentucky Wesleyan on opening weekend, striking out four and walking none. The Greenwood native got two outs in the seventh before being relieved by Christian Beard. The Saints added two runs in the ninth off John Hendry before the sophomore retired the side.

The Hounds and Saints conclude their short two-game meeting tomorrow afternoon. First pitch for the finale is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
