ST. LOUIS - The ninth-ranked UIndy baseball team (12-2) won its 10th game in a row on Wednesday afternoon, scoring five runs in the 10th inning after Maryville (8-11) plated five unanswered to tie the game late. The Hounds scored five before the Saints hit three homers off the UIndy bullpen to knot the game in the eighth inning.
Hunter Waning drew a walk in the 10th inning to bring in the game-winning run.
Trey Smith drilled a massive three-run dinger in the extra frame to give the Hounds their 10-5 win.
Brian Wichman made his second start of the season, allowing two hits and three walks over 3.2 innings.Â
Tyler Phillips led off the third with the team's first hit of the day, which
Macy Holdsworth then followed with a two-run shot for the early Greyhound lead.
Nick Miller drilled a solo homer in the fourth to extend the lead to three before a single by
Joe Kenney and Waning bean ball chased Maryville starter Zach Morrisey after just 3.1 innings.Â
In the sixth inning, Waning welcomed Saints' reliever Drake Kanallakan with a double, scoring Miller and
Dylan Jones, but Maryville's Cody Klotz hit a two-run bomb in the bottom of the frame to get the runs back.
Chris Boettcher allowed two homers by the Saints in the seventh and eighth innings that evened the game at five, but
Dylan Stutsman closed the door in the ninth to force the Hounds' third extra-inning affair of the season.Â
Kenney's third hit of the day loaded the bases with just one out in the 10th, and Waning followed with a free pass to plate
Devon Hensley. After a wild pitch scored Miller, Smith found the grass over the left-center wall to make the score 10-5.Â
The Greyhounds 12-2 record is their best start since 2011, when the team began the season 13-2. UIndy welcomes Tiffin for a three-game set this weekend at Greyhound Park. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
