Jones provides blast to spark Greyhounds comeback

INDIANAPOLIS - It was a slow start for the Greyhound offense on Friday afternoon, but the UIndy baseball team (13-2) won its 11th game in a row, defeating Tiffin (5-7) after a five-run fifth inning. Dylan Jones drilled a long homer to left-center field in the fifth to cap the comeback before the Greyhound bullpen shut down the Dragons the final three innings.

Jake Sprinkle handed in his third-straight quality start, tossing six innings and allowing just one earned run. Tiffin scored four off the righty, taking advantage of three UIndy errors in the early going. The Hounds had just six hits on the day, one from six different players, but had timely hitting to move past the Dragons.

Tiffin scored four unanswered runs over the first five innings, which UIndy mustered two base knocks before the bottom of the fifth. After Tyler Phillips reached base on a strike-three-wild-pitch, Macy Holdsworth doubled home him and Storm Joop to cut the deficit in half. Kyle Orloff was hit by a pitch just moments later, and Jones wasted no time depositing the first pitch he saw over the left-center field fence for a three-run shot to give the Greyhounds a 6-4 lead.

Jon Crawford and Christian Beard worked around trouble the next two innings, allowing a run in top of the eighth. However, the Hounds answered back when Holdsworth plated Phillips on a fielder's choice grounder. Dylan Stutsman came into shut the door in the ninth, inducing a double play and striking out the final Dragons' hitter to earn his fifth save of the season.

Holdsworth and Jones each drove in three in the win, putting Jones second on the team in the category with 15 this season. Three Greyhounds were beaned, including Orloff twice, while Holdsworth, Joe Kenney, and Phillips each drew a walk.

The Hounds and Dragons will play the middle game of the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Greyhound Park is scheduled for 12 p.m.
