UIndy completes historic finish at Swimming & Diving Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UIndy swimming & diving teams capped a stellar season with an historic finish at the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships, held March 14-17 at the Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. The Greyhound men claimed third place among DII's best, five spots better that their previous best finish. The women, meanwhile, finished tied for 23rd, their best showing in four years.

The UIndy men racked up 300 points, a feat never accomplished by an Indianapolis men's swimming & diving squad in program history. The highest-ever finish before this week for the men was eighth overall, set back in the 2004 championships. Indianapolis re-wrote fifteen different records during the championships, including one from as early as 1995. In addition, Head Coach Jason Hite was dubbed the 2018 CSCAA Division II Coach of the Year. Below is a complete list of all of the All-America honors and school records collected by the Greyhounds this week:

ALL-AMERICA ALL-AMERICA HONORABLE MENTION SCHOOL RECORDS SATURDAY
To finish out the championships, the Greyhounds collected four All-America honors on the final day between the two teams, giving them 16 overall (14 men, 2 women). Indianapolis had six All-Americans last year, consisting of all men, once again proving their improvements. Krystal Caylor kicked off finals with another All-America Honorable Mention swim, placing 13th on a :50.59 time in the women's 100 free. Junior Guilherme Zavaneli celebrated his 23rd birthday with yet another All-Americn accolade, placing fourth overall in the men's 100 free at a time of :43.63. To add another present for Zavaneli, he re-broke his own school record in the event, beating the time in both prelims and finals.

Moving into the men's 200 back, another All-America award was given to Rodrigo Codo Berti, as his 1:44.85 time placed him fifth in the nation. Sophomore TJ Leseure ended a fast weekend with his first ever All-America Honorable Mention award, finishing strong on a 2:00.75 time for 13th in the nation. The men's 400 free relay team were award an All-America Honorable Mention also, as Ante Lucev, Victor Antonon, Berti, and Zavaneli placed 11th overall on a time of 2:59.15.

Freshman Adam Rosipal ended his championship meet going 3-for-3 in individual All-America awards, placing third in the men's mile. His time of 15:16.2 is also an Indianapolis school record, beating the previous time by over seven seconds. To finish out the weekend, Payton Staman and Josh Zylstra competed on the men's three-meter to make history. As Staman placed seventh on a score of 488.55 points, and Zylstra received 453.65 points for the 13th-place spot, Payton became the first-ever diver to receive All-American honors on both the one and the three-meter springboards.

FRIDAY
Rosipal garnered his second individual All-American award in the men's 500 free, touching fourth at time of 4:25.45. His 4:23.66 time from prelims is now the Indianapolis school record. Berti added another All-American honor to his resume, this time placing fourth overall in the men's 100 back at a time of :47.55. Similar to Rosipal, Berti's prelim time of :47.28 will be the new Indianapolis record. Cassie Kury excelled in the women's one-meter, finishing her set with another school record at 433 points, and placed sixth to receive her second All-American award in her young collegiate career. In the final race of the night, Rosipal, Vitor Botana, Berti, and Zavaneli teamed up to placed third in the men's 800 free relay, claiming another All-American award. Not only that, the relay also claimed the Greyhound school record at a time of 6:31.02.

THURSDAY
In the men's 200 free relay, the team of Victor Antonon Rodriguez, Ante Lucev, Jan Zuchowicz, and Guilherme Zavaneli broke the school record on a time of 1:21.00. Guilherme Zavaneli came right back and re-broke his own school record in the men's 200 free, swimming a 1:34.42 to become the national runner-up. Payton Staman (502.65 points) placed sixth, and Josh Zylstra (523.2 points) placed second to become All-Americans on the men's one-meter, as Zylstra re-broke the Indianapolis record. To end day two, Berti, Zuchowicz, Lucev, and Zavaneli combined to swim a 3:12.53 in the men's 400 medley relay, smashing the school record and also placing third to become All-Americans in the event.

WEDNESDAY
Adam Rosipal placed third overall in the men's 1000 free at a time of 9:04.53, setting the school record. Rodrigo Codo Berti followed with a second All-American performance for the Greyhounds, this time at a 1:46.61, fourth place finish in the men's 200 IM. Berti also broke the school record in the event. The men's 200 medley relay team of Berti, Zuchowicz, Lucev, & Antonon Rodriguez also broke the school record in the event, touching the wall for a sixth place, 1:28.11 All-American award. Cassie Kury excelled in the women's three-meter, finishing sixth overall to become the first women's All-American diver since Joy Anderson in 1995. Kury dove a 468.05 to also obtain the school record.
