Hounds earn two Sunday wins at UMSL

ST. LOUIS – The No. 16 UIndy softball team (19-5, 3-1 GLVC) earned a pair of big conference wins Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader at Missouri-St. Louis. One day after snapping a 12-game winning streak, the Greyhounds went to work on another streak, downing the host Tritons by socres of 7-6 and 3-0.

GAME 1
The Hounds rebounded from a five-run deficit to steal a win in game one. After a first-inning solo home run from Taylor Podschweit gave UIndy the early edge, the Tritons exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third. The biggest blow came from senior Jennah Perryman, whose three-run blast chased UIndy starter Lauren Honkomp.

The Greyhounds came storming back in the fourth. Each of the first three hitters reached to load the bases with nobody out. Cathy Skaggs coaxed a walk to force home a run, then two batters later, junior Shannon Schuetz uncorked a pinch-hit grand slam, good for her first career home run.

The heroics continued in the fifth. With the score knotted at 6-6, senior Jessie Noone deposited a pitch over the left field fence, giving the Hounds a one-run lead that ultimately held.

Halie Waters (5-2) got the pitching win, as the Boonville, Ind., native worked the final five innings, striking out six and allowing zero runs.

GAME 2
The capper remained scoreless all the way until the top of the sixth. Noone led off the inning with a single and eventually came around to score on an UMSL error for the first run of the game. Later, freshman Brooke Montgomery provided the exclamation point with a two-run bomb in the seventh.

Freshman Haylie Foster had her best outing in the circle to date, spinning her first career shutout. She gave up just three hits while fanning seven to move to 7-1 on the year. She notably pitched around a leadoff walk and an error in the bottom of the seventh to seal the win.

The Greyhounds head to North Canton, Ohio for a midweek game versus in-region Walsh Tuesday. First pitch of the doubleheader is schedule for 3 p.m. ET.
