ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The No. 10 UIndy baseball (17-4, 3-1 GLVC) swept the doubleheader at Lewis on Sunday afternoon, winning the first GLVC series of the season.Â
UIndy 8, Lewis 7
Trailing 7-3 heading into the final inning, the Hounds scored five runs before
Dylan Stutsman shut the door on the win.Â
Dylan Jones drove in five runs, including a three-run homer in the first inning to begin the high-scoring affair. Starter
Michael Schalasky and reliever
Christian Beard allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in just 5.0 innings before
John Hendry tossed an inning of work to set up the save opportunity for Stutsman in the seventh.
Down four in their final at-bat, the Greyhounds rallied for five runs to take a 8-7 lead.
Storm Joop led of the inning with a single ahead of walks by
Joe Kenney and
Macy Holdsworth. Jones found the chalk down the left-field line to add two more RBI to his box score, while
Nick Miller followed with a two-base knock of his own to even the score. After advancing to third base on a wild pitch, Miller crossed the plate from a sacrifice fly by
Will Smithey. Stutsman struck out one in his quick inning to earn his sixth save of the season.
UIndy 14, Lewis 2
Unlike the first game, the night cap was all Greyhounds UIndy scored 10 runs in the first three innings to jump out to a 10-1 lead before never looking back.Â
Myc Witty tossed four innings in his first appearance of the season, surrendering just one earned run on one hit and three walks. The southpaw struck out four in his debut.Â
After Joop scored on an error allowing Jones to reach base, the Hounds took advantage of the Flyers' defense to score another three runs. Miller and Kenney each drove in a run, while
Conor White doubled home Kenney to end the frame with a four-spot on the scoreboard. Miller singled again in the second inning to help build the Greyhound lead, and then scored after
Hunter Waning stole second base to make the score 7-0.Â
The Hounds erased the lone Flyers run in the second inning by scoring three more in the third, thanks in large part to a double by Holdsworth that scored Joop and White. Jones grounded out to third base one batter later, allowing Kenney to cross the plate. Neither team scored again until the bottom of the seventh when Lewis added a run, but UIndy followed up with four more tallies for its fourth crooked number of the game. Waning cleared the bases with a two-bagger just before Withey plated him with a single.Â
Witty, along with
Reid Werner and
Chris Boettcher, scattered just four hits in the series finale, to lead the Hounds to a conference-opening victory.
Jones now leads the team with four dingers and 22 RBI. The two earned runs Beard allowed in the first game were the first of the season, as he sees his earned run average jump to 1.26, proving more than valuable in relief.Â
The Hounds welcome in the Bellarmine Knights for another four-game conference series next weekend at Greyhound Park. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
