SOMERS, Wis. – The 11th-ranked UIndy softball team (26-6, 10-2 GLVC) used a late-inning rally in game two to earn a split at Wisconsin-Parkside Friday. In a doubleheader originally scheduled to be played in Indianapolis, the Greyhounds dropped the opener, 4-3, before
Gianni Iannantone's three-run home run sealed a 5-4 victory in the capper.
GAME 1: UW-Parkside 4, UIndy 3
With the score knotted at 3-3 through four frames, the Rangers (15-15, 6-6) pushed across an unearned run in the top of the fifth that proved to be the game winner. With two outs and runner on first, a single and an error conspired to bring in the game's final tally.
Earlier in the contest, the Hounds struck first with two runs in the bottom of the first. UIndy loaded the bases with one out, allotting for an RBI walk by Iannantone and a sac fly by
Taylor Podschweit.
The Rangers surged with a three-spot in the third to take a brief lead until the Hounds tied it a half-inning later on a
Jessie Noone double and a Podschweit single.
Sophomore
Lauren Honkomp (9-3) took the loss in the circle. Her final line included four runs (three earned), four hits, four walks and a four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings.
GAME 2: UIndy 5, UW-Parkside 4
The Greyhounds salvaged a split with a late rally in the sixth. Down three with two outs,
Haylie Foster delivered a clutch single to score Danielson and set the stage for Iannantone.
The freshman from Orland Hills, Ill., sent a pitch over the left-center fence for a three-run bomb, good for her second collegiate home run and first game winner.
Freshman Halie Waters (6-2) came on in relief to earn the pitching win. She entered in the top of the fifth with two on and no outs, but retired the first three batters she faced to end the threat. She went on to finish with three innings of scoreless work, striking out six and allowing not a single hit.
Prior to the late offensive heroics, freshman
Taylor Danielson led off the bottom of the second with her third home run of the season.
