KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Junior
Kyle Orloff hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to bust open the Greyhound offense, leading the No. 14 UIndy baseball team (8-2) to a 7-2 victory over Truman Friday afternoon.
Jake Sprinkle tossed a gem for the Hounds, allowing just two runs over eight innings with nine punch-outs. It was the first time this season the junior hurler has recorded an out in the eighth inning. The one earned run lowers Sprinkle's season ERA to 3.24 in 25 innings of work. Â
As good as Sprinkle was on the mound, Orloff paced the Hounds attack, driving in six runs on a pair of extra-base knocks, including a long ball.
The Greyhounds loaded the bases with nobody out in the third frame after
Storm Joop singled, and
Devon Hensley and
Macy Holdsworth worked a free pass. Orloff and
Dylan Jones each knocked in a run with grounders to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
Truman evened the game in the fifth, taking advantage of an error with a two-run shot to start the inning.
A pitching change in the seventh failed to phase the Greyhounds, as Joop and Holdsworth singled to start the inning. Orloff worked a 3-1 count afterward, running into his pitch to make the score 5-2. The junior added a couple more runs in the eighth, scoring Hensley and
Will Smithey.
Sprinkle retired nine of the final 12 Bulldogs he saw, striking out six in his final three innings of work.
The Hounds will play two tomorrow against the Bulldogs in Kirksville with game one beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
