Long ball fuels sweep in doubleheader home opener

INDIANAPOLIS – The 20th-ranked UIndy softball team (12-4, 2-0 GLVC) kicked off its GLVC schedule Friday with a two wins against visiting Drury (3-9, 0-2). After combining for just one home run in the season's first 14 contests, the Greyhound sent four out of the yard Friday, including a pair of three-run bombs from junior Taylor Podschweit.

Freshman Gianni Iannantone made just one out in seven plate appearances on the day, while junior hurler Lauren Honkomp earned a win and a save in the circle.

The Hounds themselves in a 4-0 hole heading into the bottom of the third, but the offense came alive to the tune of three runs in each of the next two frames. Podschweit smoked an opposite-field dinger to score three in the third, while Iannantone followed suit with a three-run shot in the fourth, good for her first collegiate home run.

The Lady Panthers chased freshman starter Haylie Foster after two-plus innings, but Honkomp (4-2) came on in relief to allow just one earned run over the final five innings to garner the win..

Iannantone went 2 for 2 with two walks and three RBIs, and freshman Hanna Burris added two runs and two hits, including a fourth-inning double.

The bats continued to click in game two, as the Hounds scored all nine of their runs in the first three innings. Iannantone's RBI double started things off in first inning before Podschweit delivered a thunderous encore with with her second three-run homer of the day an inning later.

Like Iannantone, freshman Brooke Montgomery hit her first career round-tripper Friday with a two-run tater in the third inning.

With the game ultimately called in the bottom of the fifth due to darkness, freshman Halie Waters (3-2) earned the pitching win despite allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings. Honkomp entered with the bases loaded and one down in the fourth before spinning one-and-two-thirds hitless frames to secure her third save this season.
