Hounds split with Purdue Northwest on Tuesday

INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy baseball team (19-14) bounced back after a game-one loss on Tuesday afternoon to earn the split with Purdue Northwest (14-14) at Greyhound Park. Michael Schalasky struck out four over 4.2 innings in game two, while Storm Joop had three knocks. Hunter Waning recorded three hits on the day, including a pair in the opener.

Righty Reid Werner retired eight of the first nine batters he faced, with a lead-off walk to begin the game coming around to score for the visitors' early lead. After Joop walked and advanced to second in the Hounds' half of the opening frame, Dylan Jones doubled him home to even the game.

The Pride didn't score again until the fourth, when another walk by Werner costed him a run before a two-out double made the score 3-1 in favor of the visitors. The Greyhounds threatened in the bottom half of the seventh after Purdue Northwest added an insurance run in the top of the inning, as Jones had a chance to tie the game with two outs and runners in scoring position. The senior DH popped up to shortstop, however, to end the game.

After pitching two innings out of the bullpen on Sunday against Ohio Dominican, Schalasky nearly gave the Hounds five frame against the Pride on Tuesday to help save the bullpen in what will be a busy week.

The Greyhounds opened the scoring in the third, as Jones singled home Joop, who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Tyler Phillips scored Devon Hensley in the fourth, while Joop caused a ruckus with the Purdue Northwest defense when he laid down a bunt and advanced all the way to third base, forcing Phillips to cross the plate.

Schalasky nearly escaped damage in the fifth, but Jon Crawford entered in relief after the starter surrendered a pair of runs. Crawford proceeded to force a ground out to end the frame, and Chris Boettcher punched out a pair of visiting batters in the sixth to set up a big inning for the Greyhound offense in the sixth. Phillips, Joop, and Waning each knocked in a run after Joe Kenney singled with one gone, making the score 6-2. Dylan Stutsman closed out the game in six-pitch fashion, giving the Hounds the victory.

After giving UIndy a couple starts on the bump, Stutsman has 3.1 innings of work out the bullpen, striking out four and walking none. Joop is four for his last 10 at the plate, and has scored four runs.

The Greyhounds host Lake Erie on Thursday afternoon for a 1 p.m. start.
