INDIANAPOLIS - The oddities that happen during baseball games are the best kind, at least that is what the UIndy baseball team (25-14, 6-10 GLVC) would say. After dropping Sunday's opener to the visiting McKendree Bearcats (7-30, 2-13 GLVC), the Greyhounds came back in the bottom of the ninth to take three of four on the weekend from the conference foes.Â
Dylan Jones and
Trey Smith each had had two hits in the win, while
Reid Werner tossed 5.2 innings in the start, allowing three earned runs.
Dylan Stutsman, who blew the save with two outs in the ninth, earned his fourth win of the season and second of the weekend.Â

Michael Schalasky retired seven of the first Bearcat hitters before the visitors grabbed two runs in the third on a couple singles and an error. The hurler allowed another three runs in the fourth, all earned, as McKendree led 5-0 heading into the bottom of the inning.Â
The Hounds struck back with three of their own in the fourth, as Jones and Smith came around to score when
Macy Holdsworth reached on an error.
Nick Miller doubled home Holdsworth three pitches later to cut the deficit back to a pair.Â
UIndy went into the bottom of the seventh now down three after McKendree snuck another run across in the fifth inning. The Greyhounds had two runners on with two outs when
Kyle Orloff floated one onto the left-field grass to make the score 6-4, but Jones popped up soon after to end the threat and the game.Â
Jon Crawford pitched the final three innings for UIndy, allowing one earned run and striking out two.Â

It looked like it was going to be all Greyhounds in the finale, as the hosts exploded for four runs in the bottom of the first inning, matching their season-high for the opening frame. Jones smashed a long homer to left field as the fourth hitter of the game, bringing home Joop and Orloff, which Holdsworth followed up with a walk as the next batter. The junior came around to score two batters later when
Joe Kenney grounded out.Â
Holdworth scored again in the third inning when he scurried home after a steal by Kenney.Â
Werner flirted with trouble for the first few innings, but the Bearcats failed to score off the righty until the fourth when the visitors plated one on a ground out. McKendree chased Werner from the game with two gone in the sixth, and attacked reliever
Cole Humphrey for back-to-back hits on his first two pitches of the outing, making the score 5-4.Â
Stutsman took over to begin the seventh, attempting the three-inning save, and moved quickly until a two-out walk in the ninth shifted momentum. Working another full count to the next hitter, the Bearcats took their first lead of the game when a two-run shot make it 6-5 in favor of the visitors.Â
The fight from the Hounds was not gone, however, as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame. Jones reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed the tying run to score, sending Holdsworth to the plate. With Waning at third base, McKendree reliever Connor Gilles was called for a balk, allowing the Hounds to walk-off for the second-straight day.Â
Instead of his seventh save of 2018, Stutsman won his fourth game on the bump.Â
The Greyhounds will travel to Purdue Northwest for a mid-week twin bill on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m. in Hammond, Ind.
