GREENWOOD, Ind. - The No. 12 UIndy men's tennis team has advanced to the NCAA Championships after defeating No. 42 Wayne State in the Midwest Region Site One Final, 5-1. It is the first time the Hounds will advance since 2016, and the fourth time under head coach Malik Tabet the team will compete for a national title.Â
Wayne State looked to grab momentum in doubles, leading in the top two spots early.
Andrea Morlet and
Renato Lima dropped their decision at No. 1, 8-2, while
Nils Hoffacker and
Dario Huber fended off their No. 3 counterparts to win, 8-5. Trailing 6-5, No. 2 duo
Christoph Drechsler and
Magnus Mueller broke the Warriors' serve to gain control of the match, allowing them to force a tiebreaker at 8-8. The German tandem won, 7-5, to give UIndy a huge momentum boost heading into singles play.Â
Unlike doubles, the Greyhounds took control from the beginning in singles, as each individual won his respective first set. Drechsler made quick work of his No. 5 opponent, winning 6-1 in straight sets.
Matej Kostadinov followed soon after with a win of his own at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2, leaving it to either Mueller or Hoffacker to clinch the victory. Mueller edged out his teammate, sealing the win with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 4.Â
Hoffacker was leading 6-3, 5-2 when his No. 1 match was halted, once again stopping him from making program history with a win, while Lima was winning 2-0 in the second frame after coming back to win the first set, 7-6. Huber won his first set, 6-1, but was trailing 4-3 when Mueller won.Â
The NCAA will release the final bracket for the round of 16 later tonight. The NCAA Championships will begin next Wednesday in Surprise.Â
