Greyhounds earn first NCAA Championships victory over Hawai'i at Hilo

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 12 UIndy men's tennis team made its own history on Wednesday afternoon, defeating No. 15 Hawai'i at Hilo in the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships. The Greyhounds, who lost to the Vulcans by one point in Las Vegas over spring break, defeated the PacWest tournament runner-up, 5-3, at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.

No. 2 duo Christoph Drechsler and Magnus Mueller knotted the match at one apiece with an 8-4 victory over Bruno Figlia and Alex Fillat Perez after No. 22 Andrea Morlet and Renato Lima dropped their No. 1 bout by the same score to their 20th-ranked counterparts from UHH.

Nils Hoffacker and Dario Huber picked up a huge momentum win at No. 3, winning the tiebreaker 7-5 to take the 9-8 victory over Gregory Zukeran and Chun En Wu. The Greyhound tandem trailed 7-6 and 8-7 before forcing extra points and giving UIndy a 2-1 advantage heading into the singles competition.

The Hounds found themselves feeling déjà vu as the team led 2-1 against the Vulcans back over spring break, as well.

Lima suffered the first singles loss for the Greyhounds, but Huber rode his momentum from doubles into a No. 3 straight-set triumph 6-1, 6-2. Last time out against the Vulcans, the Hounds lost each singles match No. 1 through No. 4.

Mueller then pulled off a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 to give the Hounds a 4-2 lead with three matches still to be decided. After Hoffacker dropped a three-set decision at No. 1, Drechsler came back from a second-frame hole to win 7-6, 7-6 and give UIndy its first NCAA Championships victory.

The Greyhounds will play No. 35 Washburn tomorrow at 12 p.m. ET in one of four quarterfinal matches. Live results will be available here.
