SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 12 UIndy men's tennis team kept its season rolling on Thursday afternoon with a win over No. 35 Washburn in the quarterfinal round at the NCAA Championships. The Greyhounds romped the Ichabods, 5-1, at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
Â
The Hounds cruised through doubles, earning all three points after sweeping the Ichabods.
Nils Hoffacker and
Dario Huber were the first to finish, defeating their No. 3 counterparts by a final of 8-4.
Andrea Morlet and
Renato Lima got back on the winning track, earning an 8-6 triumph over the seventh-ranked duo from Washburn.
Â
The German tandem of
Magnus Mueller and
Christoph Drechsler also rolled at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-5 over Tommy Hunter and Raul-ALin Dicu.
Â
Needing only two wins at singles, Lima won 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets to get the Greyhounds within reach. Drechsler, who sealed the victory yesterday, was victorious once again in the No. 5 spot to clinch the 5-1 win for UIndy.
Â
Hoffacker was leading 5-4 in the second set after winning the first frame, but remains one win short of breaking the program record for singles victories in a season.
Â
The Greyhounds will battle No. 1 Barry tomorrow afternoon in a national semifinal. UIndy made history yesterday, winning its first-round matchup over Hawai'i at Hilo, and will look to keep it going tomorrow at 12 p.m. in Surprise.
