Men's Soccer remains unbeaten, tops Jewell 2-1

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's soccer team returned home after their thrilling double-overtime win over UMSL Friday night, putting their unbeaten record on the line against the visiting William Jewell Cardinals. The Hounds and Cardinals did not just fight each other, but, had to fight the unusual mid-September heat. After a scoreless first half, both teams came out in the second half with adjustments looking to score to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy was threatening in Jewell territory earlier and often in the first half. While getting a couple good looks early, the Hounds were unable to capitalize, keeping the game at a 0-0 stalemate. The Greyhound defense kept up its strong play like it has all season so far, only allowing one shot attempt in the half.

The second half started much faster for the Greyhounds, compared to the first half. It only took three minutes for the Greyhounds to find the back of the net to take the 1-0 advantage. Josh Mahon took the pass from the Benjamin Sierra in the 48th minute for his fourth goal of the season to put the Hounds ahead. It did not take much time after the first Greyhound goal for UIndy to get another. Vincent Stone took the ball across the middle in the 58th minute, beating the Jewell backs and goalkeeper for his first goal on the season, doubling the Greyhound lead to 2-nil.

Jewell managed to get on the board in the 64th minute on a penalty kick, making the Greyhound lead shrink to 2-1. The Cardinals goal was the first goal given up by the Greyhounds this year. But the Greyhound defense made sure it was the last one given up for the game. The Greyhounds came away with the 2-1 victory, making them 6-0 on the season, 2-0 in GLVC play.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Sunday's win was the second time this season the Greyhounds have only given up one shot on goal for the entire game.
-Josh Mahon is the first UIndy defender since at least 2006 to have four goals for an entire season
-Six games into the season before giving up a goal is the longest such streak in over a decade.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach John Higgins on his team's win over a tough William Jewell team, "we made hard work of it today. Credit to WJC they came here with a plan to put numbers behind the ball and frustrate us and they did exactly that. We need to learn to manage our leads better but at the end of the day we got a win on a Sunday in the GLVC and that is a hard thing to do. Great start to the season for our boys so far and they deserve a ton of credit."

UP NEXT
The Hounds stay home this week, hosting Illinois-Springfield this Friday night at 7:30 at Key Stadium.
