Men's Soccer off to best start in over a decade

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 14 UIndy men's soccer team had their toughest test of the season Thursday night when the newly-ranked No. 20 Northwood Timberwolves paid a visit to Key Stadium. After moving up 11 spots in this week's polls UIndy knew they would have a target on their back from the visiting underdogs. UIndy's defense prevailed after a slow start from both teams' offenses early, and UIndy's offense took care of business in the second half lifting the Hounds to a 3-0 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams failed to find the back of the net in the first half. Northwood only got off three shots in the first half, only two of them being on goal. Despite struggling early, UIndy still managed to get off seven shots against the Timberwolves defense. While threatening early, only three of UIndy's seven shots in the first were on goal.

Things took off for the Greyhounds after the break. Less than 15 minutes into the new period, Alejandro Steinwascher continued his hot start to his college career when he found the back of the net off a pass from Jakub Olczyk. The Steinwascher family did not take long before their next goal. This time, Alejandro found his brother Javier for his first goal on the 2018 campaign in the 65th minute. With time winding down and the game slipping away from Northwood, UIndy did not get comfortable. With less than 10 minutes to go, a Josh Mahon to Benjamin Sierra sealed the game for the Hounds, making the lead 3-0 before the horn sounded.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Since at least 2006, UIndy has never started the season with three shutouts.
-Thursday night's clean sheet was senior goalkeeper Miles Palmer's 16th of his collegiate career.
-Alejandro Steinwascher is the first Greyhound since at least 2006 to have three goals in the first three games of the season.
-The Steinwascher-to-Steinwascher is the first known brother-to-brother goal in UIndy history.

HOUND BYTES
Coach Higgins after defeating the #20 Timberwolves...
"I was delighted with the result tonight. Tthe most pleasing to me was our work rate. We worked unbelievably hard and we worked them into submission. We pressed, we were physical, we won first balls, we picked up second balls. I did not think it was our greatest night from a soccer standpoint. We did not pass well but we did what you have to do in college soccer to win games. Honestly, we wore them down in the second half and ended up being really good against a really good Northwood team."

Alejandro Steinwascher on his third goal of the season and assisting his brother's first goal of the season...
"Tonight was awesome getting Javi back and getting him his first goal of the season. We have been on fire lately and I hope we keep it up."

Javier Steinwascher on his first goal of the season coming off an assist from his brother...
"It was great getting the goal from my brother. I saw Ben (Rohder) get the ball in the middle of the field, he played it in and then fed it to Alejandro. I let him do the magic, get me the ball back, and I put the ball in."
