ALLENDALE, MI – After a long week back at school, the training trip behind them, the Greyhounds made their way up north to Grand Valley State University this past Saturday. There, they faced off against the Lakers, while the women squared off versus Davenport as well. The Greyhound women stomped Davenport with a final score of 217-69, but lost to Grand Valley 105-200. The men took a loss as well to the Lakers, falling on a tight score of 151-147.
The Greyhounds started strong as the men's 400 medley relay kicked the meet off with a first place finish. The team of
Ante Lucev,
Jan Zuchowicz,
Kael Yorke, and
Guilherme Zavaneli took gold with their 3:23.77 time.
Adam Rosipal continued to dominate this season, as his 9:26.59 time in the 1000 free gave the men a second consecutive victory to start.
Diving went well for the Greyhounds, as
Cassie Kury stepped up on the one-meter to lead the team with a second place finish, totaling 261.8 points. The men secured the top two spots on the three-meter board, as junior-duo
Payton Staman (312.3) and
Josh Zylstra (300.75) boosted the Greyhounds' overall score. They would later work the same magic on the one-meter, as Staman's 284 points and Zylstra's 280.6 points were worth another stunning one-two finish in the event.
Freshman
Sasha Shatskikh performed brilliantly in the women's 200 free, slamming a time of 1:54.13. The time snuck past a GVSU swimmer by over a second, securing another victory for the Hounds. The Greyhounds would go onto win the next two races, as
Guilherme Zavaneli's 1:42.17 in the men's 200 free and
Izzi Clark's :57.87 in the women's 100 back provided a plethora of points for the teams.
After four more events without a victory, sophomore
Brady Stabler sped into the wall in the men's 200 fly, putting down a time of 1:53.68.
Ante Lucev came up big for the Hounds as well, his :46.8 time in the men's 100 free securing a victory over a GVSU swimmer by .03 seconds.
Claiming his second victory on the night, Rosipal stood above all in the men's 500 free, obliterating the heat on his 4:35.54 finish. The final victory of the night for the greyhounds belonged to Shatskikh, claiming her second win in her young career. Her time of 2:08.23 in the women's 200 IM led the way for an end to some fabulous racing.
"There were plenty of solid performances today for our team," explains head coach
Jason Hite after the meet, "Our new freshmen [
Sebastian Wenk and
Sasha Shatskikh] got their first taste of racing, we had several two-time winners, but now we shift our focus. Our goal is to continue to take care of ourselves so we're mentally and physically ready for the GLVC Championships, because we're going to preform our very best from February 6-9."
Before the upcoming GLVC Championships, the Greyhounds will have to excel in a dual meet with Butler University on January 27, starting at noon EST. With the end of the regular season approaching, the Hounds continue to strive towards their goal: creating history.
