Hardaway buzzer beater sends Hounds to victory

INDIANAPOLIS – It took the full 40 minutes on Thursday evening from Nicoson Hall, as the UIndy men's basketball team (12-5, 5-2 GLVC) downed Rockhurst (10-8, 4-4 GLVC) with a fade-away jumper from CJ Hardaway as the buzzer sounded.

The made field goal gave the senior a career-high 28 points, as he finished 12-of-13 from the floor.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Hardaway paced a slow offense early on for the Greyhounds, tallying 15 points in the first half. However, the Hawks led at the break despite turning the ball over 11 times. Rockhurst controlled the paint in the opening 20 minutes, as well as outscoring UIndy, 9-5, in second opportunities.

Down five late midway through second half, it was the defense that sparked an offensive outburst. Jimmy King and Jordache Mavunga hit key shots to cap an 11-0 Greyhound run with 5:27 remaining. After a Marcus Latham jumper to give the Hounds a 64-61 lead, the Hawks used a short 5-2 run to knot the game at 66 apiece.

With 31.2 seconds left on the clock, King wasted time away before handing it over to Hardaway. The senior drove to the paint, planted, and spun before watching the ball sail through the air and through the net just as time expired.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Over the past two games, Hardaway is 19-for-20 from the field after sinking all seven attempts on Monday afternoon at Missouri S&T. The Indianapolis native leads the team with a 59.7 percent mark from the field this season.

Latham continues to be a force, drawing his second straight start for the Hounds. The junior transfer finished with 19 points on nine-of-17 shooting in the win.

Mavunga played 18 minutes on Thursday night, scoring eight points and grabbing two rebounds. It is the most points for the junior since January 5 against Truman.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds look to ride momentum into Saturday afternoon when William Jewell visits the Circle City for the first time since 2017.
