INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy student-athletes
Marizel van Jaarsveld and
Jan Zuchowicz were awarded the PNC GLVC Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards, as announced by league officials Wednesday. Both collected wins during the tri-meet against Missouri State and Indiana State over the weekend, while van Jaarsveld broke multiple UIndy school records as well.
In her first season at UIndy, van Jaarsveld has already made her mark as a Greyhound by breaking two UIndy individual records. Her time of 2:01.49 in the 200 IM was almost two seconds under the record, while the 400 IM mark was smashed by more than six seconds by her final time of 4:19.59. Both events qualified as an NCAA B-standard, setting her up early in the season to possibly qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships in March.
The weekly honor is the first for any UIndy female this season, and the first since last season after the annual House of Champions Invitational.
Zuchowicz collected a team-high four victories over the weekend against Missouri State, splitting it with two individual events and two relays. His wins were in the 50 free (20.79), 100 breast (55.53), 200 medley relay (1:30.53) and the 200 free relay (1:22.78). His 100 breast time was enough for an NCAA B-standard, starting his campaign to qualify for a third straight trip to Nationals.
This marks the first GLVC weekly honor for Zuchowicz this season, while the last one for the men came in January of last season in
Payton Staman.
