INDIANAPOLIS – Riding a three-game winning-streak coming into today, the UIndy women's soccer team welcomed the Missouri-St. Louis Tritons to Key Stadium Sunday afternoon. After fighting some rain and tough field conditions, UIndy was able to win their 4th in-a-row in double overtime over UMSL.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a brief 15-minute rain delay to begin the game, the Hounds and Tritons took the field at Key Stadium. In a physical and competitive first half, it took a while before either team was able to put a ball in the back of the net. UIndy had gotten close on a couple of free kicks prior, but sending their shots high. In the 38th minute, junior
Dana Youssef took the free kick from over 20 yards out and placed it perfectly over the UMSL keeper to score her first goal of 2019 to take a 1-0 lead into half.
Â
The Tritons came out in the second half playing more aggressively than they did in the first. The Greyhounds offense was still able to work the ball down in towards their goal but did not put any additional points on the board heading down the stretch. With just under a minute to go, the Tritons were given a corner kick and placed it perfectly to get it past the UIndy defense, heading in a goal to tie the game with just over 30 seconds to go.
Â
UMSL pushed the ball in UIndy territory for most of the first overtime period, but
Sophia Saucerman did not let anything by her in the extra period. In the second overtime, the Hounds controlled the tempo and had the Tritons play their game. UIndy was able to connect shortly after a shot deflection by UMSL when
Kaylee Zimbelmann found the back of the net in the 105th minute to finish off the Tritons.
