FINDLAY, Ohio- Four Greyhounds placed in the top eight at the Findlay Open Saturday, with
Brody Conner's championship at 184 leading UIndy.
In addition to Conner,
Dawson Combest and
Jack Eiteljorge took runner-up honors at 165, while
Kyle Barkovich finished in eighth place at 149.
Conner (11-1) went 5-0 through the 184 bracket, opening his day with a pin in 2:15 over Tiffin's Nicholas Smythe. After an 8-3 decision over Dylan Bisel of Clarion, Conner came away with an 8-0 major decision over Brham Ginter of Ashland in the bracket quarterfinal, and advanced to the championship with another major decision, 14-0 over Kent State's Xavier Torres, in the semifinal. Conner won 6-5 over West Liberty's Zane Lanham to earn the 184 title.
Combest (3-0) and Eiteljorge (6-1) both went 3-0 on the day, en route to both advancing to the 165 pound bracket title match. Â Combest posted a tech fall in his quarterfinal match, and won his semifinal in exciting fashion- a 7-5 win in SV-1 over Findlay's Devin Trevino. Eiteljorge took three decisions before the teammates elected to not wrestle the championship match.
Barkovich (8-3) went 5-1 through the 149 bracket before meeting his six-match limit for the day. Barko counted a pair of pins and a tech fall among his wins en route to defaulting to the 8th place finish.
Four more Greyhounds placed in the brackets on the day, wrestling unattached.
Breyden Bailey (7-1) went 4-1 on the day on the way to finishing second at 141, while
Andrew Sams (6-5) went 4-1 on the day with a fall and a major decision in taking third at 174.
Gavin Ritter (6th, 133) and
Chase Wilkerson (8th, 133) rounded out the placers on the day.
UIndy jumps into dual action next weekend, heading up I-65 for three duals at Purdue Sunday. The Greyhounds face off with Northern Illinois, Clarion and the host Boilermakers as a part of the event, with wrestling beginning at 10 a.m. from West Lafayette.
