Hounds Endure Season’s First Loss at Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 8 Undy football team (7-1, 5-1 GLVC) dropped its first game of the season with a 34-27 defeat at Lindenwood University Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds pulled to within one score in the final minute but could not overtake the host Lions (6-3, 5-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first quarter from both teams, the Hounds forced turnovers on three consecutive Lindenwood possessions in the second, cashing in on two of them. UIndy parlayed a muffed punt by LU into a career-long 42-yard field goal by Paul Buisman, and on the ensuing Lions possession, Loren Strickland came up with his first collegiate pick and returned it 40 yards for six, staking the Hounds to a 10-0 advantage midway through the second.

Lindenwood found the end zone twice in the final three-and-a-half minutes, however, including a diving TD plunge by QB Cade Brister as time expired to take a 14-10 lead into the locker room. Brister followed up with a 53-yard touchdown pass early in the third to extend the lead.

Despite a third interception by the Greyhounds defense, Lindenwood continued its scoring run with another third-quarter TD, taking a 28-10 edge heading into the final quarter.

UIndy would deliver a pair of touchdowns in the fourth to cut it to seven late, but a failed onside kick in the final minute sealed the Lions' win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Strickland, Mitch Dewitt and Landry Mavungu each garnered an interception on the afternoon, marking the first three-INT game of the season for the UIndy defense.
- Despite his three picks, Brister finished 38-of-59 passing for a school-record 541 yards and three TDs for the Lions.
- Meanwhile, TJ Edwards finished 17-for-32 for 179 yards. He was also the Hounds' leading rusher with 82 yards, including a 44-yard scramble and score in the fourth.
- Al McKeller was not far behind with 71 rushing yards. He now sits 105 yards away from 1,000 for the year.
- Dewitt supplemented his third interception of the season with eight total tackles, tying fellow DB Connor Steeb for the team high.
- Senior defensive lineman Jacob Schmatz was credited with 1.5 sacks.
