Hounds Lead DI-Heavy House of Champions

INDIANAPOLIS – As the UIndy swimming & diving teams prepared for another weekend of the annual House of Champions Invitational, the Greyhounds faced a new challenge as being the only Division II team in the field. Divisions didn't stop the Hounds in their tracks, as the men finished day one on Friday in first place overall with 479 points, while the women stand second at 406 points.

Both teams kicked off the meet with two incredible record-breaking performances in the 200 free relay. The men were led off with Jeron Thompson, and came home with the squad of Ante Lucev, Jan Zuchowicz and Victor Antonon. The men ended the race second overall on a final time of 1:19.32, including three student-athletes under 20 seconds in their split. The women took home the crown for the Greyhounds in the event, as Krystal Caylor, Mariia Rezhylo, Edda Skoric and Leticia Vaselli tore through UIndy's record with a final 1:31.72 time. Both teams achieved an NCAA DII qualifying time for March.

"This has been my first taper with the team, and it's been exceptional,"  elucidates Vaselli. "The energy tonight was one of the main reasons we're able to break so many records today, and we're looking forward to see what our family does for the rest of the weekend."

The women featured three more student-athletes who achieved NCAA DII B-cut time standards in the 500 free, all placing within the top 16 in the event. Senior Melanie Arnold led the charge in 10th at 4:56.97, with teammates Sasha Shatskikh (11th; 5:01.1) and Danielle Wood (14th; 5:04.73). The men matched the women and gathered three Greyhounds to gain B-cuts as well, placing two of them in the top eight in the event. Freshman Christian Hedeen finished second overall in the 500 free, touching the wall at a final time of 4:23.83. Cody Liske (sixth; 4:26.38) and Sebastian Wenk (11th; 4:28.18) threw together terrific swims as well, garnering several points in the Greyhounds' efforts.

The swimming & diving teams boasted another win in the women's 200 IM, as Caylor claimed the title on her time of 2:01.08. Caylor's time was almost a full second ahead of the second-place finisher and under the B-cut in the event. Marizel van Jaarsveld (sixth; 2:02.69) and Darian Murray (10th; 2:04.69) also gained more B-cuts for the Greyhounds in the event as well. Freshman Grant Largen was the sole Greyhound to achieve a B-cut in the men's 200 IM in finals, placing fifth in the event on his 1:50.87 time. TJ LeSeure finished in the top eight as well, coming to the wall on a 1:52.56 finish for seventh overall.

"The energy has been great so far, we're thriving off of it," commented head coach Jason Hite. "Our big swims are preparing us more and more for the postseason, as we've already broke six records between the two teams this weekend."

The Greyhounds continued their winning ways as Vaselli continued an excellent season in the women's 50 free. The freshman shaved off two-tenths of a second from her prelims time, sliding her seven one-hundredths ahead of the rest of the field to take home a first-place finish on her 22.96 time. Not only did this give her a B-cut in the event, but Vaselli created history by breaking the school record in the event as well. Rezhylo (seventh; 23.45), Johanna Buys (eighth; 23.51) and Edda Skoric (11th; 23.63) also found their way to gain points for the Greyhounds in the events with B-cut swims. The men flooded the final individual event with five different scoring student-athletes who also claimed a B-cut in the 50 free, while also breaking history as well. Antonon came out and tore down the oldest record on the men's side, set back in 2005. His time of 20.00 was fast enough for second place overall in the event. I'Likai Crompton-English (fifth; 20.3), Zuchowicz (sixth; 20.43), Ante Lucev (ninth; 20.4) and Thompson (11th; 20.48) also made their way into a scoring position in the event, garnering another set of B-cuts each in the event.

"It's a relief to break my first individual record," mentions Antonon. "Not only that, we took down other records like the 200 free relay. The year looks so good for us and we plan on continuing to rock throughout the weekend."

The UIndy swimming & diving teams will continue their hot-streak on Saturday, as diving will also make their first appearance in the meet as well. The teams will swim the 200 medley relay, 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and the 800 free relay on day two, and diving will compete in one-meter for the women and three-meter for the men. Prelims are scheduled for a 10 a.m. start time, and finals will commence at 6 p.m. Finals will also be broadcasted live on ESPN3.
