INDIANAPOLIS – After an incredible day one at House of Champions, the Greyhounds swimming & diving teams built on that success on Saturday night by having a stellar day two as well. The men currently sit third after Saturday's session, compiling 1008 points, 61 shy of the lead. The women sit fourth overall in the meet after day two with 825.5 points in total.Â
The men took off right out of the gate, claiming a first place finish in the men's 200 medley relay. The squad of
Jeron Thompson,
Jan Zuchowicz,
Kael Yorke and
Ante Lucev piled up a 1:27.05 time, breaking both a UIndy record and a DII relay time standard. The women broke the 200 medley relay record as well, finishing on a time of 1:41.92 for third place overall. The team of
Edda Skoric,
Mariia Rezhylo,
Johanna Buys and
Leticia Vaselli also tore down the UIndy record in the process.
The UIndy teams continued their hot streak by placing a student-athlete at third for both teams in the 100 fly.
Darian Murray shattered the B-cut standard in the event for the women, putting down a 54.92, a half-second drop from her prelim time this morning. Sophomore
Kael Yorke stepped up for the men in the event, tossing down a season-best time of 47.83 to beat the B-cut standard by a second and a half. Yorke also sits about a half-second from breaking the UIndy record.
Marizel van Jaarsveld brought back the winning ways for the Greyhounds by earning an NCAA DII Automatic Qualifying time in the women's 400 IM. Van Jaarsveld bested her season-best time at UIndy by almost four seconds, setting the slate on her own school record with a 4:15.77 final time. Freshman
Grant Largen eclipsed a milestone of his own, breaking the four-minute mark in the men's 400 IM for a B-cut in the event. Largen's final time was 3:59.0, putting him to fourth place overall in the event.
UIndy flooded the men's 200 free, placing three student-athletes within the top eight who also achieved B-cut standards.
Christian Hedeen continued to have an astounding meet, rising up to third overall in the event on a time of 1:38.46. Senior
Victor Antonon (fourth: 1:38.71) and
Sebastian Wenk (seventh; 1:39.83) also pushed the Greyhounds up the leader board with terrific performances. The women put up three swimmers of their own in the top 16, as
Krystal Caylor led the charge in a fifth place performance with a time of 1:50.18.
Sasha Shatskikh (sixth; 1:50.29) and Vaselli (12th; 1:51.75) followed suit, scoring crucial points for the Greyhounds.
The Greyhounds continued to break records throughout the night, this time in the men's 100 breast. Zuchowicz continued his dominance this season, slashing his own record with a 53.44 winning time in the event. Thompson took a top eight finish as well, as his final time of 55.28 in the event qualified him for fourth overall. Both Zuchowicz and Thompson achieved NCAA B-cut times in the event. Rezhylo came out and tore down the UIndy women's 100 breast record right after, just missing an NCAA Automatic Qualifying standard by under a second. Her final time of 1:01.97 in finals placed her second overall in the event.
Edda Skoric followed up her teammates' performances and broke her own record as well, this time coming in the women's 100 backstroke. Her B-cut time of 54.46 not only broke the UIndy record, but also placed second overall in finals. Senior
Ante Lucev surpassed a B-cut as well for the men's 100 back, tearing through the field for third place overall on a final time of 49.21.
The Greyhounds ended the night with the 800 free relay, as the women smashed a UIndy record set in 2011 and also earned a NCAA qualifying time in the event. Shatskikh, Skoric, van Jaarsveld and Caylor teamed up to earn said honors, finishing on a final time of 7:25.66 for second place overall in the event. The men ended the evening session with a third place finish in the men's 800 free relay, touching on a time of 6:37.64. The men's squad consisted of Hedeen,
Anthony Williamson, Wenk and Antonon.
"it's great to see the team getting behind each other and hyping everyone for every race," describes Caylor. "We've already broken so many team records, and being with a team that loves the sport this much is truly special."
