CLEARWATER, Fla. – The UIndy softball team (2-3) concluded its time at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., with a convincing 7-1 win versus California (Pa.). The Greyhounds hung six runs on the board in the sixth inning to help down the Vulcans.

Sophomore
Hanna Burris started the sixth-inning rally with a hit by pitch, and then the flood gates opened. Four Hounds reached base before recording the first out, including
Taylor Podschweit, who delivered a two-run, bases-loaded double.

But the biggest blow came off the bat of senior
Rachel Vander Wagen. The Aurora, Ill., native lifted a 1-1 pitch the right field, scoring three runs with her first career home run.

Meanwhile, starting pitcher
Halie Waters (2-1) earned her second win of the weekend with a solid performance in the circle. The sophomore went six innings, striking out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just three hits, one walk and one run. Junior
Lauren Honkomp came on to pitch a perfect seventh to finish the game.
In addition, sophomore shortstop
Brooke Montgomery was voted to the all-tournament team.

UP NEXT
UIndy with make another trip south next week when it buses to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Invitational Feb. 15-16. The four-game weekend kicks off with an in-region game versus Tiffin on Friday.
