Hounds unable to overcome sluggish start against Maryville

INDIANAPOLIS – A second-half offensive surge proved not enough on Thursday night, as the UIndy men's basketball team (16-7, 9-4 GLVC) suffered a 79-69 setback to Maryville (9-14, 4-10 GLVC) in Nicoson Hall.

The Greyhounds shot 56.8 percent from the field in the second half, but were unable to come back from a 16-point opening half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy converted on just six field goals in the first 20 minutes, shooting an uncharacteristic 18.2 percent from the floor and 11.8 percent from 3-point range. Maryville, however, sunk four-of-10 from deep, including a perfect seven-for-seven from the charity stripe.

The Hounds put 53 points on the scoreboard in the second half, while the defense forced nine Maryville turnovers. Marcus Latham found his offensive game, shooting six-of-nine from the floor down the stretch. A jumper by Trevor Lakes with 2:25 cut the deficit to three points for the Greyhounds, but the Saints' offense failed to stutter and eventually put the game out of reach.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Jesse Kempson played nearly 27 minutes off the bench, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 boards to record his fifth double-double of the season.

Redshirt-junior Jimmy King also finished with a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 assists for his third of the season.

After not hitting a 3-pointer in the first half, Lakes bounced back for a pair in the final 20 minutes. The sophomore finished with 10 points, the 16th time this season he has recorded double figures.

Jordache Mavunga played a huge role off the bench in the near comeback, scoring 11 points and recording seven boards. The junior transfer also nabbed two steals in his 32 minutes of action.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Stan Gouard: "We have to get CJ healthy, and Jesse out of the dog house. At the same time, give credit to Maryville. They had nothing to lose and everything to gain. They played loose and free, they played with purpose and passion. We did not come out ready to play."
