Greyhounds continue streak with 2-0 day at Grand Park

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy softball team (7-3) upped its win streak to six with a pair of in-region victories in nearby Westfield, Ind., Friday. The Greyhounds blanked Ferris State, 6-0, before handing Ohio Dominican a 7-3 defeat. The games were originally scheduled to take place in Evansville, Ind., until incoming weather forced the move to the turf fields of Grand Park.

The Hounds took game one behind a stellar performance from junior pitcher Lauren Honkomp (2-2). The Richmond, Ind., native spun six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out nine while walking zero. No Bulldog managed an extra-base hit, while only one got as far as third base.

Sophomore Hanna Burris recorded two hits, a run and an RBI to fuel the offense. Senior Taylor Podschweit roped an RBI double in the fifth inning, and senior Brooke Reiss earned a ribbie with a bases-loaded, pinch-hit HBP in the seventh.

Leading by one run heading into the bottom of the third, the Greyhounds exploded for four runs to pull away from the Panthers. UIndy racked up three extra-base hits in the frame, including back-to-back RBI triples from Taylor Danielson and Shannon Schuetz, with the latter notching her first career three-bagger. Senior Rachel Vander Wagen, who is now hitting a team-high .389 on the year, later had a two-run double to extend the rally.

In the circle, starter Halie Waters upped her record to 4-1 on the young season by recording her third straight start with at least 10 Ks. The sophomore struck out 10 in the three-hit complete-game effort, while only two of her three runs allowed were earned.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds have two more region contests at Grand Park slated for tomorrow, starting with a meeting with Northwood at 10 a.m. ET.
