Softball ups steak to 8 with two more wins Saturday

WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy softball team (9-3) remained hot, taking two games Saturday to extend its winning streak to eight. The Greyhounds took down a pair of region opponents in Northwood and Tiffin at nearby Grand Park.

UIndy 5, Northwood 4
The Hounds jumped out to a 5-0 lead and held off a late run by the Timberwolves to hang on for the dub. An RBI triple from Gianni Iannantone started the scoring in bottom of the first, before UIndy piled on with another run in the second and three more in the fourth. The fourth inning featured RBIs from Ariana Liceaga and Brooke Montgomery, who smashed a triple and a double, respectively.

After getting on the board with a single tally in the sixth, Northwood managed a late surge in the seventh inning. The Wolves pushed across three more runs and put the potential tying run at third base, but sophomore pitcher Lauren Honkomp came on to get the final two outs and earn her first save of the season.

Sophomore Halie Waters got the start in the circle and pitched fifth scoreless frames before being relieved in the seventh. She finished with six strikeouts and two walks while upping her record to 5-1 on the year.

UIndy 10, Tiffin 5
The Hounds faced off against Tiffin for the second time in eight days. After downing the Dragons, 9-2, at the Music City Invitational on Feb. 15, UIndy used a couple of big innings to take control of the contest. With Montgomery as the catalyst, UIndy hung a combined seven runs on the board in the fourth and fifth frames. The Lebanon, Ind., native drove in four of those runs, as she recorded a triple in each inning.

Liceaga notched two hits for the second straight game, including an RBI single in the fourth and a double in the seventh. Iannantone, Taylor Danielson and Hanna Burris also had a pair of knocks.

Honkomp got the start and the win, tossing four scoreless frames to move to 3-2 on the season. Senior Katelyn Fisher and freshman Amy Kaniewski combined to get the final nine outs.

UP NEXT
UIndy recently added a home doubleheader with in-region Urbana to the schedule. The Hounds will welcome the Blue Knights to Baumgartner Field on Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
