TO BE THE BEST YOU HAVE TO WRESTLE THE BEST
The Greyhounds' dual schedule featured 19 total duals this season, with UIndy posting a record of 12-7. Of the 19 duals, 11 were against ranked opponents, with the Greyhounds going 5-6 versus teams ranked in the NWCA Coaches Poll this season. In total, UIndy outscored its opponents 194-114 in dual action on the season.Â
A BUNCH OF OLD MEN
The Greyhound lineup features six senior starters -
D.J. Smith,
Angelo Robles,
Heath Lange,
Shelden Struble,
Brian Wagner and
Dylan Faulkenberg - heading into the regional tournament, with five of those seniors a part of the UIndy program for five years. Combined, the six seniors bring a total of 13 past regional experiences and seven trips to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships into this year's postseason. Those numbers grow to 16 regional experiences and nine trips to Nationals when
Ana Abduljelil and
Brody Conner are added to the mix.Â
RETURNING NATIONAL QUALIFIERS
Continuing to talk about the experience of the UIndy lineup, of the 10 Greyhound wrestlers competing Saturday, five have made it out of the Regional and made the trip to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships in their UIndy careers:
133 - Abduljelil: 2017 (125)
157 - Lange: 2017, 2018
165 - Struble: 2014 (157), 2015
184 - Conner: 2018
285 - Faulkenberg: 2016, 2017, 2018 Â
MIXING THE YOUNG WITH THE OLDÂ
A pair of Greyhounds will be making their Regional debuts in a UIndy singlet this year, with
Kyle Barkovich at 149 and
Gleason Mappes at 174 joining their veteran teammates. Barkovich, a redshirt junior, sports a #12 ranking coming into his first regional, while Mappes is a true freshman who pulled his redshirt just a month ago.
GLVC RECAPÂ
UIndy finished runner up in the Great Lakes Valley Conference for the second straight year, falling to McKendree 22-12 in the league championship's final match Feb. 3. Following the championships, Greyhound heavyweight
Dylan Faulkenberg was named the 2019 GLVC Wrestler of the Year, and joined
Ana Abduljelil as a unanimous choice to the All-GLVC First Team.
Angelo Robles and
Shelden Struble earned All-GLVC Second Team honors, while
Kyle Barkovich,
Brody Conner and
Brian Wagner all earned Honorable Mention selection.Â
The All-GLVC First Team honor was the first of both Faulkenberg and Abduljelil's careers, with Faulkenberg earning Second Team honors the two previous seasons. Robles, Struble, Barkovich and Wagner all were honored for the first time in their career, while Conner was a Second Team honoree a season ago.
HITTING THE CENTURY MARKÂ
Dylan Faulkenberg became the 15th Greyhound in UIndy Wrestling history to amass 100 wins or more with a 10-0 major decision over Maryville's Logan Radik Feb. 3. The redshirt senior heads into the Regional with an overall record of 101-26, with an even 50 of his wins coming with bonus points. Â Faulkenberg, already a three-time National Qualifier, comes into this weekend with the chance to become just the fifth Greyhound in program history to make four trips to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships. The two-time Midwest Classic Champion is also the defending Regional Champion at 285, and brings a mark of 26 career pins into this weekend's action - a mark good for 12th-most in UIndy Wrestling history.
PINNERS GONNA PIN
The one-two punch of #12
Heath Lange and #6
Shelden Struble at 157 and 165 has produced a combined career total of 63 pins, with Struble sticking 34 opponents and Lange pinning 29 as a Greyhound. The totals are good enough to put Struble fourth all time on the career pins listings for the UIndy Wrestling, while Lange sits in a tie for ninth-most pins all time.
Dylan Faulkenberg also makes the recordbook listings for career pins, with 26 falls in his career, good for 12th-best all time.
BONUS POINTSÂ
Combined, the 10 Greyhounds representing UIndy Wrestling in this year's NCAA Regional have 42 wins over the rest of the wrestlers in the Super Region 3 field. Of those 42 victories, 15 have come with extra points. Six via pin, five via tech fall and another four via major decision. Faulkenberg and Struble lead the UIndy squad in bonus point victories, with Struble posting nine pins, one tech and one major and the Greyhound heavyweight contributing four pins, three techs and three majors thus far on the season.Â
