Late jumper sends Hounds home with loss in final game at the PAC

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – It was the final game ever at the Physical Activities Center (PAC) on the campus of Southern Indiana, and it was the Screaming Eagles (19-7, 11-5 GLVC) that sunk the last field goal with two seconds remaining that downed the UIndy men's basketball team (17-9, 10-6 GLVC) on Saturday evening, 67-65.

Alex Stein drained a jumper just moments after Jimmy King hit his second straight 3-pointer to knot the game at 65 apiece. The loss on Saturday marks the fourth straight defeat to Southern Indiana.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds hung in the first half, in large part to controlling the paint and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. UIndy doubled Southern Indiana with a 20-10 advantage inside, while the Hounds scored 10 points off five offensive rebounds.

It was Stein that led the Eagles to the halftime lead, scoring 18 of his 26 in the opening half. The Hounds drilled just three from deep, while the Eagles made six from 3-point range.

Southern Indiana failed to relinquish its lead until King's 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining. The Hounds were kept in check from long range, shooting just three-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.

A layup from Jesse Kempson out of the media timeout put the Greyhounds down two, but the Eagles stretched that lead back to six. King's pair of 3-pointers with under 72 seconds left set up Stein's buzzer-beating moment to give the Hounds their second straight loss.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Trevor Lakes was held silent in the first half, before hitting three 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes to finish with nine points. The sophomore also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds in the loss.

King hit a speed bump early on offensively, but the junior finished seven-of-14 from the field and 17 points. The Indianapolis native continued to fill up the scoresheet with five assists and four rebounds.

The Greyhounds attempted just nine free throws on Saturday, finishing the regular season with 19 in two games against Southern Indiana. UIndy has been held to 10 or less free throws on four occasions this season, while it has gone to the charity stripe at least 20 times in 10 different games.

Going into the weekend, the Hounds were ranked sixth in the initial Midwest Regional poll the NCAA released on Wednesday. Southern Indiana, who dropped a conference game to Lewis on Thursday, was ranked just ahead of UIndy in the five-spot. The next regional poll will be released on February 27.

UP NEXT
With just two games remaining on the regular-season schedule, UIndy will travel to Truman and Quincy next weekend. The Greyhounds topped both the Bulldogs and Hawks in January when each visited Nicoson Hall.
