ON TAP
The UIndy men's basketball team concludes the regular season this weekend by heading west to face Truman and Quincy for the second time in 2019.Â
The Greyhounds cruised to a 94-67 win back on January 3 against the Hawks, two days before fending off a fiery Bulldogs' squad, who nearly erased an 18-point deficit before the Crimson and Grey knocked down free throws to seal the victory.Â
UIndy is 6-1 all-time against Truman, with its only loss coming in January 2018 to the Bulldogs. Against the Hawks, the Hounds are 21-12 in the series and have won five of the last six contests.
DOG FIGHT
Sitting at an 8-10 record and 3-5 mark in GLVC play, Truman has now won six of its last eight games heading into the final weekend of the regular season. The Bulldogs are just mere percentage points from sixth place in the conference, and hold a steady lead over Illinois Springfield.Â
Brodric Thomas continues to a beast for the Bulldogs, averaging 18.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per league game, while also dishing out 3.6 assists. The redshirt junior has also been a force on the defensive end, recording 28 blocks and 23 steals in 20 games.Â
Taurin Hughes and Nathan Messer have been steady 3-point shooters this season, combining to shoot 41.2 percent from deep. Turner Scott has handed out 92 assists on the season, while Cade McKnight is averaging 12.7 points on 60 percent shooting from the field.Â
Head coach Jeff Horner is in his first season at Truman. He previously served on the men's basketball staff at the University of North Dakota.
(BLACK)HAWK DOWN
Quincy is on the opposite end of the spectrum than Truman, losing eight of the last night heading into Thursday night's contest with GLVC-leading Lewis. The Hawks squeezed in a win over Missouri S&T in between four-game losing streaks, the latter of which involves two losses to their traveling-partner Truman.Â
The Hawks have four players averaging double figures, with Jah-Kobe Womach leading the group at 12.2 points/game in GLVC action. Marcus Hinton, who paces Quincy on the boards with 7.8 rebounds, is also averaging just over 10 points/game.Â
Tanner Stuckman has been the Hawks' leader from 3-point range, drilling 46.8 percent of his attempts from deep.
Head coach Ryan Hellenthal is in his second season at Quincy. Before accepting the head job, Hellenthal was an assistant for the Hawks, helping the team reach its first NCAA tournament in seven seasons.
THE CENTURY MARK
Last Saturday marked the 102nd-career game senior
Jesse Kempson has played in for the Greyhounds. With three guaranteed games remaining for the Hounds, the Indianapolis native is likely to enter the top-20 in program history in games played.Â
Eric Davidson, a 2018 UIndy graduate, finished his career with 105 games played.
CLIMBING UP THE RECORD BOOK
Jesse Kempson's name is written all over the program record book as he continues his ascent in total points and total rebounds. The 6'7 forward has grabbed 543 boards in his career, which ranks 21st all-time in UIndy history.Â
Kempson is just eight rebounds from entering the top-20, and 53 from the top-15. He also ranks 29th all-time in scoring with 1,135 career points.
BIG SPLASH
Sophomore
Trevor Lakes is already 16th in program history with 120 made three-point field goals, and is 16 from joining the top-10. Former teammate
Eric Davidson ranks fifth as a Hound with 214 successful long-range attempts.
A HELPING HAND
Junior point guard
Jimmy King has 162 assists this season, and is just 14 helpers from entering the top-five in a single season for the Greyhounds. The Indianapolis native is 10th in program history with 329 assists, and trails former
Lucas Barker by 14 to enter the top-eight.Â
King ranks second in assists/game during league action, and has totaled 96 helpers in 16 conference games this season.
LAST TIME OUT
The Greyhounds hung in the first half, in large part to controlling the paint and capitalizing on second-chance opportunities. UIndy doubled Southern Indiana with a 20-10 advantage inside, while the Hounds scored 10 points off five offensive rebounds.
Â
It was Stein that led the Eagles to the halftime lead, scoring 18 of his 26 in the opening half. The Hounds drilled just three from deep, while the Eagles made six from 3-point range.
Â
Southern Indiana failed to relinquish its lead until King's 3-pointer with nine seconds remaining. The Hounds were kept in check from long range, shooting just three-of-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.
Â
A layup from
Jesse Kempson out of the media timeout put the Greyhounds down two, but the Eagles stretched that lead back to six. King's pair of 3-pointers with under 72 seconds left set up Stein's buzzer-beating moment to give the Hounds their second straight loss.
SEAT AT THE TABLE
The Greyhounds were ranked sixth in the first edition of the Division II Midwest Regional rankings, the NCAA released last Wednesday. The NCAA will anounce a new top-10 for each of the next two eeeks prior to the selection show scheduled for Sunday, March 10.
Each team ranked below the Greyhounds lost at least once last weekend
TWO HUNDRED AND COUNTING
Head coach
Stan Gouard reached 200 career wins with the Greyhounds' victory at Illinois Springfield on February 2. Gouard is just the second coach in program history to win at least 200 games, with Angus Nicoson totaling 483 victories during his tenure.Â
This marks Gouard's 11th season at the helm of the program, making him the third-longest-tenured coach in program history. Good mentored for 15 seasons, while Nicoson coached the Hounds for more than 29 years.
MICHIGAN MEN
The UIndy men's basketball team is 4-0 this season against teams from the state of Michigan. After opening the season with triumphs over Northwood and Saginaw Valley, the Hounds toppled Grand Valley State in Allendale before downing Lake Superior State in overtime at Nicoson Hall on November 21.Â
The four wins over teams from Michigan is the most in program history against the state. The GLIAC schools have combined to go 40-42 so far this season, with all but Saginaw Valley winning double-digit games through February 2.
HOMEGROWN HOUNDS
UIndy has seven players from the Indianapolis area, including three from within the city limits:
CJ Hardaway (Warren Central),
Jesse Kempson (Heritage Christian), and
Jimmy King (Roncali). Hardaway and Kempson are two leading returners for the Greyhounds this season, combining for 20.9 points, 9.7 boards, and 3.4 assists per game a year ago. King returns for his redshirt-junior campaign after taking a medical redshirt last season.Â
