INDIANAPOLIS- At the conclusion of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Wrestling Championships, the league awarded its annual All-Conference honors, with Greyhound heavyweight
Dylan Faulkenberg taking the GLVC's Wrestler of the Year award, while seven total UIndy wrestlers were named All-GLVC.
Faulkenberg, currently ranked #3 in NCAA Division II, was a unanimous selection to the All-GLVC First Team and was also a unanimous choice as the league's top wrestler. The redshirt senior went 4-0 on the weekend at the GLVC Championships, including earning his 100th career win versus Maryville's Logan Radik and taking an 8-2 win over #9 Luke Diener of McKendree.
Joining Faulkenberg on the All-GLVC First Team was UIndy 133,
Ana Abduljelil. The redshirt sophomore was also a unanimous choice to the First Team, after going 3-0 at the championships with a win over #10 Charles McNeal of McKendree.
Earning All-GLVC Second Team honors were #9
Angelo Robles at 141 and #7
Shelden Struble at 165. #12
Kyle Barkovich at 149, #12
Brody Conner at 184 and
Brian Wagner at 197 all earned Honorable Mention honors. Conner also earned the Greyhounds' selection as its James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Honoree.
McKendree's James Kisgen was voted as the GLVC Coach of the Year, while Tyler Stengall of Maryville earned the league's Freshman of the Year honors. The #6 Bearcats and #12 Maryville with six All-GLVC selections apiece, followed by UIndy (4), Bellarmine (2), Ouachita Baptist (1) and Truman State (1).
Seven of the 10 first-team honorees were unanimous selections including Bellarmine's Andrew Sams (174), UIndy's Abduljelil (133) and Faulkenberg (285), Maryville's Tyler Harrington (165) and Bailey Kelly (184), and McKendree's Marcus Povlick (125) and Ryan Vasbinder (197).
Bellarmine University earned its first-ever GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award in the sport. In addition, seven student-athletes were recognized as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and are now candidates for their respective school's male Spalding Sportsmanship Award at the end of the academic year.
