CLEARWATER, Fla. – The UIndy softball team kicked off its 2019 season Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla. The Greyhounds (0-2) lost games to a pair of Division II opponents, including Tampa and West Georgia.
Â
Tampa 6, UIndy 0
The Greyhounds battled the Spartans in what was a one-run game through four innings. UIndy threatened to tie it in the bottom of the fourth;
Taylor Danielson led off with a hit by pitch before moving up on a sac bunt by
Taylor Podschweit. Danielson was stranded at second, however, as the next two Hounds were retired to end their best scoring chance.
Â
Tampa went on to score three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh to pull away.
Â
Danielson and
Brooke Montgomery provided UIndy's only two hits – both singles. Sophomore
Halie Waters (0-1) took the loss in the circle, surrendering three runs and two walks while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings.
Â
West Georgia 8, UIndy 0 (5 inn.)
UIndy once again ran into a hot pitcher, as UWG junior Lindsye Jefferson tossed a five-inning shutout. Montgomery managed the only two hits for the Hounds, with singles in the third and fifth innings. Junior
Ariana Liceaga added a pinch-hit walk in the fifth.
Â
Junior
Lauren Honkomp endured the loss. She gave up five hits, four walks and five runs in 2 2/3.
