Softball earns season’s first win at Leadoff Classic

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The UIndy softball team (1-3) continued play at the NFCA Division II Leadoff Classic Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., earning a split versus a pair of in-region opponents. The Greyhounds earned a 10-3 win versus Hillsdale in the morning before falling, 9-1, against Wayne State in the afternoon.

UIndy 10, Hillsdale 3
Cathy Skaggs' two-run double in the third inning gave the Hounds a 3-2 lead before the Chargers (2-1) knotted it top of the fifth. But UIndy broke it open in the bottom of the fifth with seven unearned runs. A Taylor Danielson single and a sac bunt/Hillsdale error started the rally, with Shannon Schuetz's two-double and Brooke Montgomery's three-run homer punctuating it. Rachel Vander Wagen and Hanna Burris also had ribbies in the frame.

Freshman pitcher Amy Kaniewski got her first career start for the Hounds, going three innings and allowing five hits and two runs. It was sophomore Halie Waters (1-1) that got the win, however, as she tossed the final four frames while giving up just one run and fanning five.

Sophomore Gianni Iannantone chipped in two hits, a run and an RBI at the dish.

Wayne State 9, UIndy 1 (6 inn.)
UIndy got on the board with a run in the top of the first inning. Taylor Podschweit followed Danielson's one-out single with a two-bagger to give the Hounds the early lead.

The Warriors (2-1) answered with a three-spot in the bottom of the first, however, and added three more in the fourth to pull away. The Hounds needed three pitchers to complete the five innings, with Lauren Honkomp (0-2), Katelyn Fisher and Kaniewski each going 1 2/3.
