CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (15-5) notched a pair of victories Tuesday at the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. Senior
Taylor Podschweit's seventh-inning solo shot lifted the Greyhounds to 2-1 win versus 24th-ranked Wayne State in game one, and UIndy later exploded for an 11-run outburst to top Holy Family in the afternoon capper.
#17 UIndy 2, #24 Wayne State 1
In a battle of nationally-ranked Midwest Region foes, Tuesday's second game came down to the very last inning. With the score knotted at 1-1 heading into the seventh, Podschweit delivered the decisive blow with a leadoff blast to put the Hounds ahead by one.
Sophomore
Halie Waters (8-2) made it stick by tossing a scoreless bottom of the seventh on the way to the complete-game win. She scattered seven hits and three walks, while striking out seven and allowing a single unearned run.
The Hounds' first tally came in the fourth inning when
Gianni Iannantone plated
Taylor Danielson, who coaxed a leadoff walk.
The result avenges a 9-1 loss to the Warriors back on Feb. 9.
UIndy 11, Holy Family 0 (5 inn.)
The Hounds capped the day by handing Division II Holy Family a lopsided defeat. Pitchers
Lauren Honkomp (6-2) and
Katelyn Fisher combined for a three-hit shutout, while the UIndy offense racked up 11 runs to run-rule the Tigers in five innings.
Senior DP
Rachel Vander Wagen went yard for the third time in the last four games, connecting on a two-run shot in the second inning – part of a three-RBI game. Sophomore shortstop
Brooke Montgomery chipped in a single, a stolen base and two runs. She was also one of six Greyhounds to draw a walk.
