Hounds Toss Consecutive Shutouts on Final Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 24 UIndy softball team (17-5) had a particularly memorable pitching day Wednesday, as sophomore Halie Waters and freshman Amy Kaniewski combined to allow just four hits in a pair of shutout wins at the PFX Spring Games. In their final day of competition in the Sunshine State, the Greyhounds topped both Urbana and Minnesota Duluth by identical scores of 3-0.

Waters (9-2) struck out five of the first six batters on the way to retiring the first 11 she faced. She went on to amass 12 Ks against just three hits and two walks. The Boonville, Ind., product has now surrendered just one earned run in her last four starts spanning 26 innings. Two of those starts included shutouts versus Urbana.

Offensively, the Hounds got all the runs they would need in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Brooke Montgomery started the game with a leadoff double and later scored on a passed ball. Haylie Foster followed with an RBI double later in the frame, while Hanna Burris added an RBI single in the second.

Montgomery and Burris combined for six hits and two runs, while Foster went 2-for-4 with a ribbie.

A good as Waters was in the circle in the first game, Kaniewski (2-1) was even more masterful. The rookie hurler had the best start of her young collegiate career, tossing a one-hitter to blank the Bulldogs. She pitched around two walks and the aforementioned lone hit in the fourth inning, while UMD managed just one base runner in the other six innings combined.

Like game one, UIndy pushed across two runs in the first inning; Burris roped a one-out double ahead of Taylor Danielson's two-run bomb to center.

Montgomery, who finished 2-for-3 at the dish, came around to score the final tally in the sixth.
