King headlines All-GLVC honorees for Greyhounds

INDIANAPOLIS – Four members of the UIndy men's basketball team received All-GLVC recognition for the 2018-19 season, the league announced on Wednesday morning.

Overall, there were 33 players recognized by the league, comprising two all-league teams, an all-defensive squad, and an all-freshmen group.

After an injury sidelined him a year ago, junior Jimmy King headlines the list for the Greyhounds, earning first-team honors for the first time in his career. Senior Jesse Kempson and sophomore Trevor Lakes were named to the All-GLVC Second Team, while senior CJ Hardaway was placed on the conference's All-Defensive squad.

King averaged 11.5 points, 6.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds in 18 GLVC contests this season. The floor general for the Hounds ranked second in helpers, along with third in turnover-to-assist ratio, and 10th in minutes played. The Indianapolis native has recorded four double-doubles this season, including two in conference play.

The junior point guard was an All-GLVC Second-Team honoree back in 2016-17.

Kempson joined King on the second-team list two seasons ago, and now the 6-7 forward wraps up his career as an All-GLVC second teamer once again. Born and raised in Indianapolis, Kempson ended the regular season on a terrific six-game stretch, posting a pair of double-doubles over that time.

Kempson scored 12.6 points and grabbed 5.9 rebounds per league game in 2018-19, while also recording 14 blocks in 18 contests.

Lakes has proved to be more than just a deep threat during his sophomore campaign, adding a team-high 6.0 rebounds to his team-best 14.2 points per game over conference play. The sharp-shooter drilled 61 shots from beyond the arc, averaging 3.59 made 3-pointers per league game as a second-year player.

This marks the third straight season the Greyhounds have had a sophomore earn All-GLVC recognition.

Hardaway is the seventh Greyhound to be named to the GLVC All-Defensive team, with it being the 10th time a member of the program earned the distinction. There has been at least one Hound on each of the All-Defensive squads the conference has released since 2012-13.

The Indianapolis native recorded a team-high 29 steals this season, with 17 coming in GLVC contests, while also recording eight blocks. The senior also ranked 14th in field goal percentage and 28th in scoring this season.

Lewis garned three of the four major awards, including Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, Kendale McCullum, and Coach of the Year, Scott Trost. Truman rookie Cade McKnight was tabbed the league's Freshman of the Year.

In addition, Miles Wayer was selected as UIndy's recipient of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. The sport's 14 nominees are now eligible to become one of their school's two overall Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.

The Greyhounds begin their postseason run tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Vadalabene Center on the campus of Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. UIndy will tip off against Drury, with the winner advancing to face Lewis/Truman on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
