Softball Opens Spring Break with Split, Snaps Streak

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (12-4) kicked off the annual PFX Spring Games by splitting a pair of contests Saturday in Clermont, Fla. The Greyhounds defeated Georgian Court, 2-1, to extend their winning streak to 11 before dropping an extra-inning contest against No. 23 Southern New Hampshire.

#17 UIndy 2, Georgian Court 1
The Hounds started their trip with a thrilling victory against GCU Saturday morning. With the scored locked at 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, UIndy pushed across the game-winning run on a fielding error by the Lions. After a leadoff walk by Shannon Schuetz and a sac bunt by Cathy Skaggs, pinch runner Sydnie Foster came all the way around from second on a fielding error by the GCU shortstop to score the deciding tally.

Sophomore pitcher Halie Waters was the biggest standout, however. The Boonville, Ind., product got the complete-game win with a four-hit, 15-strikeout performance. She surrendered a run to the game's very first batter before shutting out the Lions the rest of the way. Waters racked up 14 of her career-high strikeout total in the final six frames, upping her record to 7-1 on the season.

Brooke Montgomery and Haylie Foster each added two hits, while Taylor Danielson recorded an RBI with a sac fly in the third inning.

In a match-up of nationally-ranked foes, the Penmen (6-1) survived an extra inning affair with some timely hits. UIndy led 3-0 heading into the seventh, but SNHU took the led with a four-spot in the top of the frame. UIndy extended the game with an RBI single from Haylie Foster in the bottom half.

Three scoreless innings followed before the Penman once again managed a four-run rally, this time in the top of the 11th. Taylor Danielson delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the inning as the Greyhounds brought the tying run to the plate with one out, but SNHU reliever Gabriella Vachon came on to get the final two outs and earn the save.

Waters (7-2) took the loss for UIndy after tossing the final 4 2/3 innings, including the four-run 11th.
