UIndy earns region win in Sunday split

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 17 UIndy softball team (13-5) continued play at the annual PFX Spring Games Sunday, defeating Ferris State, 13-4, before losing to Saint Cloud State, 7-3, in Clermont, Fla. Senior Rachel Vander Wagen racked up six hits on the day, including a pair of home runs.

#17 UIndy 13, Ferris State 4
UIndy defeated Ferris State for the second time this season. After shutting them out on Feb. 22 in Westfield, Ind., the Hounds hung 13 runs on the board versus the region foe Sunday. Gianni Iannantone and Rachel Vander Wagen provided the pop, with the former smacked a three-run bomb in the first inning and the latter a two-run shot in the fifth. Vander Wagen added two singles and a double, while Hanna Burris also went 4-for-4 with a stolen base and a walk.

Junior Lauren Honkomp (4-3) earned the pitching win, allowing four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Freshman Amy Kaniewski finished the game with 2 2/3 scoreless innings.

St. Cloud State 7, #17 UIndy 3
Despite another big game from Vander Wagen, the Greyhounds dropped a 7-3 decision to St. Cloud State. The Aurora, Ill., native had another homer as well as a double and the Hounds out-hit the Huskies, 10-8, but SCSU combined for three round trippers to out-slug UIndy.

Kaniewski (1-1) got the start in the second game, taking the loss while allowing four earned runs in two-plus innings. Meanwhile, Burris, Taylor Danielson and Taylor Podschweit each chipped in a pair of hits.

UP NEXT
The Hounds get Monday off before playing two more games on Tuesday, starting with a region contest versus No. 24 Wayne State at 11:30 a.m.
