Waters, Honkomp Toss Shutouts as Hounds Sweep Bearcats

LEBANON, Ill. – Fresh off earning its first top-10 ranking in two years, the No. 9 UIndy softball team (38-10, 16-4 GLVC) proved a stingy guest Friday, allowing zero runs in a pair of wins at McKendree University. The Greyhounds upped their win streak to 11 with victories of 6-0 and 8-0 behind back-to-back shutouts by Halie Waters and Lauren Honkomp.

UIndy 6, McKendree 0
The Greyhounds hung four runs on the board in the bottom of the first to take control, which was ample cushion for starting pitcher Halie Waters, as the sophomore ace proceeded to shut down the Bearcat offense. She pitched around six walks but allowed just two hits all game – both singles, both to shortstop Caitlyn Lowry – on the way to her 18th win of the season.

Sophomore Brooke Montgomery recorded a pair of RBI singles, sophomore Gianni Iannantone had two walks and two runs, while senior Taylor Podschweit drew three free passes to move into sixth place in the statistic in the UIndy career annals.

UIndy 8, McKendree 0 (5 inn.)
Game two unfolded much like the first. UIndy once again put up a four-spot in the first frame, with an RBI double by Haylie Foster fueling the rally. Then starter Lauren Honkomp took over and spun her own two-hitter, walking just one and fanning three to also earn her 18th win.

The Hounds went on to score two runs in the second and two more in the fourth to run-rule the Bearcats in five innings. Both Hanna Burris and Podschweit scored twice, Iannantone and Cathy Skaggs added two RBIs apiece, and Sydnie Foster chipped in two hits and two steals.
