INDIANAPOLIS – Brian Robb scored with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter to lift the No. 6 UIndy men's lacrosse team (14-1) to a 15-14 victory over No. 14 Rockhurst (12-4) in the GLVC Championship game on Sunday afternoon at Key Stadium.
Â
It is the second straight GLVC tournament title for UIndy, as the Greyhounds claimed last season's inaugural championship over Young Harris College.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After grabbing an early 2-1 lead, the Greyhounds surrendered five consecutive Rockhurst goals to dig a hole already in the first quarter. A score from
Matthew Johnson at the 5:29 mark in the second frame cut the deficit to 8-6, but the Hawks took advantage of a pair of faceoff wins to lead 10-6 at the break.
Â
UIndy has been strong defensively in the second half all season, and Sunday proved no different with the Hounds limiting the Hawks to just one goal in the third quarter and four total in the final 30 minutes.
Robbie Berardi stepped up, winning 17-of-33 attempts at the x over GLVC Specialist of the Year Zach Bodeau and second-teamer Sal Valdivia , including the faceoff with 44 seconds remaining that led to Robb's game-winner.
Â
Â
The Greyhounds outscored the Hawks, 9-4, in the second half, with Robb scoring each of his three goals after halftime. M. Johnson also scored twice in the second half. After just making three saves on 13 Rockhurst shots in the first two quarters,
Jarod Kimble stood on his head in the final 30 minutes, stopping six-of-10 Hawks' shots on goal.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Parker Johnson tallied a game-high six points on Sunday, adding three assists to his hat trick. The junior out of New Westminster, British Columbia scored twice in the second half, finding the back of the cage with 46 seconds of each other.
Â
Eight different Greyhounds recorded at least one caused turnover, as
Noah Grove led the unit with a pair.
Â
Jack Belobrajdic led all non-faceoff specialists with five ground balls, while M. Johnson and Nathaniel Webber picked up three apiece. Berardi led all players with 10 scoops.
Â
Shawn Kimble – who fed Robb the game-winning goal – finished with four points and has tallied 12 over the past four contests.
Â
HOUND BYTES
"It's a great feeling for these seniors to win back-to-back conference titles, since, of course, they're the ones that started it all," head coach
Greg Stocks said after the game. "We definitely don't like digging a hole like that, and when you play against a team like Rockhurst they take full advantage of your mistakes.
Â
"For us to come back against this team really shows what kind of make up our guys have."
Â
Stocks praised Berardi for getting the offense going against one of the top faceoff duos in the country. "He was awesome; he has to prepare for not just one, but two awesome faceoff guys and to do what he did out there really is a testament to what he does."
Â
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds have one regular season contest left on the 2019 docket and will travel down to No. 1 Limestone next Saturday afternoon. Last season, the Hounds downed the Saints, 11-10, in Gaffney, S.C.
