GAFFNEY, S.C. – It was too little, too late for the No. 4 UIndy men's lacrosse team (14-2) on Saturday, as the Greyhounds dropped the regular-season finale to No. 1 Limestone (18-0), 18-11.
Â
UIndy cut the deficit to just four early in the fourth quarter, but the NCAA Division II top-ranked offense did not slow down its attack to pull away from the Greyhounds during the waning minutes.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Limestone did not waste any time on Saturday, scoring three times in first three-and-a-half minutes. After
Kyle Basch netted the first Greyhounds' goal, the Saints quickly responded with two more to lead 5-1 after the opening quarter.
Â
The Greyhounds calmed down in the second frame, inching within three after goals from Nathaniel Webber and
Drew Billig. After a rare faceoff win in the first half, UIndy squandered an opportunity to score yet again, leading to four unanswered Limestone tallies to close the quarter.
Â
Parker Kump and
Parker Johnson netted three in a row to get the Hounds to trail 14-10, however, the Saints ran away in the final nine minutes before the final buzzer sounded.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Matthew Johnson led UIndy with three points, adding a goal to his two assists.
Â
Jordan McKenzie provided fruitful defense in the loss, causing two turnovers and scooping up five ground balls.
Â
Limestone finished with 53 shots, including 31 on goal. Senior netminder
Jarod Kimble made 13 saves, while picking up three ground balls.
Â
MORE NOTES
Limestone attacker Larson Sundown tallied a game-high 10 points …
Jack Johnson was one of three Greyhounds to score twice on Saturday … after losing the faceoff battle in the first half, UIndy and Limestone split the chances at the x, 9-9.
